External Hazards Lead

Location: Derby, Manchester, Warrington with Hybrid Working

Department: Safety & Regulatory Affairs

About the Role

Rolls‑Royce SMR is seeking an experienced External Hazards Lead to play a pivotal role in the development of our Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Power Station and the successful completion of the Generic Design Assessment (GDA) process. You will also assess potential future sites for suitability against the Environment, Safety, Security and Safeguards (E3S) Case. This is an exciting opportunity to influence the future of clean energy and contribute to a project that will shape the UK’s energy landscape.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own, develop, and maintain the external hazards safety case programme.
  • Prepare submissions for the E3S Case and GDA projects.
  • Lead and develop a team of up to 10 direct reports.
  • Represent the project at internal reviews and external regulatory meetings.
  • Assess candidate sites for SMR power stations with respect to external hazards.
  • Undertake deterministic analysis to support licensing efforts.
  • Mentor and train team members.
What We’re Looking For
  • Education: Degree in Engineering, Maths, Physics, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience:
    • Strong knowledge of external hazards and safety case development.
    • Experience with UK civil nuclear regulatory regime (or similar).
    • Background in Nuclear Power Plant design.
  • Skills:
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to work in multidisciplinary teams under tight deadlines.
Salary & Benefits
  • Salary: £57,500 – £75,600
  • Benefit Allowance: £2,200
  • Bonus Opportunity: 12.5%
  • Life Assurance: 6x pensionable salary
