An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Lead Electrical Engineer to take a senior technical role in the design and delivery of Protection & Control systems for HV and EHV transmission substations.

This is an excellent opportunity for a Chartered Electrical Engineer with significant transmission experience to lead technically complex projects that directly support the reliability and resilience of the UK's power network.

You'll provide technical leadership across multiple projects, oversee the development of advanced protection and control schemes and act as a key technical interface between clients, multidisciplinary design teams, contractors and other stakeholders.

The Role

As a Lead Electrical Engineer - Protection & Control, you'll be responsible for:

Providing technical leadership across HV Protection & Control projects
Leading the design and implementation of protection and control schemes for transmission substations
Developing best practices, standards and engineering methodologies
Providing technical expertise across protection relays, SCADA and substation automation
Ensuring designs comply with IEC, IEEE and relevant UK transmission standards
Leading technical reviews and resolving complex engineering challenges
Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering and project teams
Managing engineering resources, programmes and project budgets
Acting as a key technical interface with clients, contractors and regulators
Supporting tenders with technical input and cost optimisation strategies
Mentoring and developing junior engineers
Supporting innovation and the development of future Protection & Control solutions

What We're Looking For

We're looking for an experienced electrical engineer with significant substation Protection & Control expertise.

Ideally, you'll have:

Extensive experience in HV/EHV substation Protection & Control engineering
Strong knowledge of protection relays and protection schemes

Experience with SCADA and substation automation systems
Knowledge of communication protocols including IEC 61850 and DNP3
Experience leading engineering teams and delivering large-scale power projects
Strong understanding of IEC, IEEE and relevant grid standards
Degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline
Chartered Engineer (CEng) status
Excellent technical leadership and stakeholder management skills

Experience with power system analysis software such as ETAP, DIgSILENT or similar

Previous National Grid experience would be highly advantageous but is not essential.
