Materialis Industrialised Engineer (Advanced joining and forming)
Location: Sherwood, Nottingham
Construction has operated the same way for generations. We're changing that. Our vision is to transform construction through industrialised manufacturing—creating, proving and deploying technologies that make building safer, smarter, faster and more predictable.
At Laing O'Rourke, our R&D Manufacturing team is turning breakthrough ideas into real-world solutions that are redefining how construction is delivered. As part of the Technology & Innovation team, they sit at the forefront of the industry's evolution, accelerating the shift from traditional building methods to a smarter, more advanced future.
With the capability to create digital twins, develop bespoke production lines, trial emerging manufacturing technologies and test new products at scale, this is far more than modern methods of construction. It is the future of construction, being built today.
Behind every DfMA innovation lies a sophisticated programme of research, testing and validation. Working closely with our in-house design, digital engineering, manufacturing and delivery teams, the R&D Manufacturing team transforms ambitious concepts into scalable, industry-changing solutions that are shaping the next generation of construction.
The opportunityWe're looking for an engineer who can bring together materials knowledge, manufacturing expertise and practical problem-solving to help develop scalable production solutions. Working across R&D and industrialisation programmes, you'll influence how products move from concept and validation into repeatable, efficient manufacture.
Could this be you?- Do you enjoy balancing engineering performance with practical manufacturing considerations?
- Have you helped improve how products are manufactured, formed, joined or industrialised?
- Are you excited by the opportunity to apply your experience in a new sector and help shape the future of construction?
- Define materials, forming and joining strategies for new product families.
- Evaluate material selection, product forms and coatings to improve manufacturability and repeatability.
- Develop and assess forming routes for metallic products, including plate, tube and section-based components.
- Recommend joining methods that balance quality, automation, cycle time and cost.
- Collaborate with design, manufacturing, production and supplier teams to develop practical engineering solutions.
- Support trials, validation and qualification activities for new products and processes.
- Capture and share manufacturing knowledge to support future industrialisation programmes.
- Experience influencing manufacturing, materials, forming, joining or product development decisions within an engineering or industrial environment.
- Understanding of how design and engineering decisions affect manufacturability, quality, performance and cost.
- Experience working collaboratively with engineering, manufacturing, production, quality or supply chain teams.
- Ability to assess technical trade-offs and contribute to practical, scalable solutions.
- Experience supporting products, processes or technologies through development, testing, implementation or continuous improvement.
- Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Experience with materials selection, metallic material behaviour or component durability.
- Knowledge of forming processes such as bending, rolling, pressing or section forming.
- Knowledge of welding, fastening, adhesive bonding or other joining technologies.
- Experience using simulation, FEA or digital manufacturing tools.
- Exposure to automation, robotics, fixturing or advanced production technologies.
- Understand…
