What is the job role?

We are looking for an Accounting Technician to join our Financial Management service, working with Finance Business Partnering teams to support the Council’s financial responsibilities. In this role, you will support the delivery of the Annual Financial Cycle including budget monitoring and management, budget estimates, final accounts, and financial control. The role involves ensuring accurate and complete financial information through analysis and challenge, supporting budget holders in meeting their financial responsibilities and providing flexible support to service areas.

You will also contribute to the preparation of financial accounts, assist with financial planning and analysis, and respond to ad-hoc requests for information. The role supports the development of financial models and promotes value for money and efficiency across the Council’s operations.

Main duties and responsibilities of this role are:
  • Supporting budget holders and business partners to manage budgets and forecasts.
  • Providing timely and accurate financial information, analysis and reports.
  • Ensuring the accuracy and completeness of financial information through analysis and challenge.
  • Supporting the development of financial models and responding to ad-hoc financial requests.
  • Participating in financial training and development activities, and working to professional accounting standards.
  • Contributing to financial planning activities and the preparation of financial accounts.
  • Supporting the provision of financial information, guidance and advice to service areas.
Who are we looking for?

This is an excellent opportunity for an AAT‑qualified Accounting Technician (or someone with equivalent experience or qualifications), who is self‑motivated, organized and analytical with a strong foundation in financial principles and a commitment to providing high‑quality support across a range of financial management tasks.

You will need:
  • A solid understanding of accounting principles and their practical application.
  • The confidence to support both finance and non‑finance professionals, while identifying opportunities for improved ways of working.
  • Experience working in a financial environment where policy considerations are important.
  • The ability to prioritize and manage workloads effectively, often to tight deadlines.
  • Excellent attention to detail and accuracy when preparing financial and statistical information.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills, with the ability to interpret and analyse financial data.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel.
  • A proactive approach to problem solving and a positive attitude to continuous learning and development.

If you have just become an accountant, this post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Standard DBS check.
