Project Finance Manager

Hybrid Working

High-Growth, Private Equity-Backed Business

BTG Recruitment is working with a rapidly growing, private equity-backed business to recruit a newly created Project Finance Manager
.

This is a strong opportunity for a qualified accountant who enjoys working close to the operational side of a business and wants to move beyond traditional month-end reporting into a more commercially focused role.

The business has grown significantly through organic expansion and acquisition, and this position will play a key role in improving financial visibility across one of its largest operating divisions.

Reporting to the Head of Finance, you will take ownership of project reporting, forecasting and commercial analysis, working closely with Project Managers, Sales and Operations to understand how individual projects are performing and where margins are expected to land.

The Role

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Taking ownership of financial reporting and MI for a significant project-based division
  • Analysing project revenue, costs, profitability and margins
  • Forecasting project outcomes and expected year-end performance
  • Reviewing and challenging project budgets and assumptions
  • Working directly with Project Managers to understand progress, costs and risks
  • Partnering with Sales to understand budgets and commercial assumptions at the outset of projects
  • Working with Operations to translate project progress into accurate financial forecasts
  • Preparing budgets and rolling forecasts
  • Identifying changes in project margins and clearly explaining the drivers behind them
  • Supporting improvements to long-term contract accounting and project reporting
  • Contributing to the implementation of new finance and operational systems
  • Providing clear, practical financial insight to non-finance stakeholders

This is a genuinely hands-on commercial role. You will be expected to get underneath the numbers, understand what is happening operationally and help the business make better decisions.

About You

You will be a fully qualified accountant with experience gained within a project, contract or commercially focused environment.

Your current title could be:

  • Project Accountant
  • Commercial Accountant
  • Finance Business Partner
  • Management Accountant
  • Senior Management Accountant
  • Project Finance Manager
  • Commercial Finance Business Partner

Experience in some of the following areas would be particularly relevant:

  • Project accounting
  • Long-term contracts
  • Margin analysis
  • Cost to complete
  • WIP
  • Revenue recognition
  • Budgeting and forecasting
  • Commercial business partnering

Candidates from construction, engineering, infrastructure, building services, installation, utilities, rail or other project-led sectors would be of particular interest.

Applications will also be considered from qualified accountants in practice who have worked closely with clients operating long-term contracts or project-based accounting models.

What Will Make You Successful

The technical side of the role is important, but so is your ability to communicate.

You will be working closely with operational teams and Project Managers, so you need to be comfortable discussing financial performance in a straightforward and practical way.

You will ideally be:
  • ACA, ACCA or CIMA qualified
  • Commercially minded and naturally inquisitive
  • Confident challenging assumptions
  • Comfortable working with operational and non-finance stakeholders
  • Able to explain financial information clearly and without unnecessary jargon
  • Strong on budgeting, forecasting and financial analysis
  • Ambitious and keen to progress
  • Comfortable working within a fast-growing and evolving business
The Opportunity The role offers:
  • £55,000 to £65,000 basic salary
  • Performance-related bonus
  • Hybrid working following the initial onboarding period
  • Exposure to a growing, acquisition-led business
  • Significant interaction with senior finance and operational stakeholders
  • The opportunity to shape project reporting and commercial finance processes
  • Strong longer-term career development potential

Some occasional travel will be required to meet operational teams across the UK.

If you are a qualified accountant with project finance experience and want a role where you can influence commercial performance rather than simply report it, we would be keen to hear from you.
