Summary

Key Job Responsibilities

Service Management and Development

  • Oversee the delivery, management, and growth of the pharmacy clinical trials service.
  • Attend clinical trials meetings relevant to the specialty.
  • Collaborate with research teams and the Principal Pharmacist to prioritize and identify key clinical trial services.
  • Develop, implement, and audit clinical trials practices in the pharmacy.
  • Provide expert advice on clinical trials to various departments and teams.
  • Support senior pharmacists and directors in clinical trials management and project development.
  • Contribute to business planning and strategy development in response to service expansion, new consultant appointments, and identified risks.
Clinical Trials Service (80%)
  • Lead and manage a comprehensive specialist clinical trials pharmacy service.
  • Work according to GCP guidelines and established pharmacy clinical trials procedures.
  • Assess the feasibility of clinical trial protocols and ensure safe and deliverable pharmaceutical aspects.
  • Calculate and manage the costs associated with pharmacy support for clinical trials.
  • Liaise with research teams and sponsors to ensure timely appraisal and approval of clinical trials.
  • Finalize the setup of clinical trials, including writing and checking dispensing procedures.
  • Ensure adherence to protocol requirements for investigational medicinal product (IMP) management.
  • Facilitate the development of new services for novel therapies in research settings.
  • Provide clinical pharmacy services for patients in clinical trials.
Clinical Practice (20%)
  • Support a high-quality, specialist pharmacy service.
  • Offer specialist advice on prescribing and drug therapeutics according to guidelines.
  • Provide highly specialized drug therapy advice to medical, nursing, and pharmacy staff.
  • Verify and assess prescriptions to ensure safe and effective prescribing.
  • Identify potential adverse drug reactions and interactions.
  • Counsel patients on medication usage and compliance.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes.
  • Supervise the preparation and dispensing of medications.
Financial Resource Management
  • Calculate pharmacy support costs for clinical trials.
  • Identify cost savings and efficiency opportunities in medicine usage.
  • Ensure proper invoicing and reclaim mechanisms for clinical trials costs.
Human Resource Management
  • Serve as a role model and supervise junior staff.
  • Lead business case submissions for service developments.
  • Assist in staff recruitment and performance management.
  • Contribute to the training and appraisal of pharmacy staff in the clinical trials team.
Research and Development
  • Participate in and supervise research activities.
  • Integrate research evidence into practice to enhance pharmacy services.
  • Maintain connections with specialist groups to adopt best practices.
Education and Training
  • Collaborate with senior pharmacists to develop training plans for clinical trials.
  • Deliver educational sessions to staff on medication issues related to clinical trials.
  • Provide training and assessments for various pharmacy and healthcare staff.
General
  • Participate in flexible working arrangements, including evenings, weekends, and bank holidays.
  • Take part in the on-call service for shift-working pharmacists.
  • Undertake additional duties as required.
Freedom to Act
  • Make and be accountable for clinical decisions within the specialty and competence area.
  • Act independently within national and local guidelines and protocols.
  • Work to professional standards set by the General Pharmaceutical Council.
  • Adhere to NUH policies and current legislation relating to medicinal products and clinical trials.
