Job overview

Specialist Pharmacist Practitioner – Adult Oncology, Band 8a, 9‑month fixed‑term secondment (maternity cover). Full time, 37.5 hours per week. Employment by Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

Main responsibilities
  • Provide specialist, patient‑facing clinical service to a defined caseload of oncology patients.
  • Prescribe systemic anticancer therapies (SACT) and supportive treatments in the clinic setting.
  • Initiate, evaluate and modify therapeutic interventions; monitor treatment efficacy and adverse events.
  • Develop and update treatment protocols for new anticancer medicines and regimens.
  • Maintain medicine expenditure reports and contribute to medicines incident reporting.
  • Attend multidisciplinary team meetings, ward rounds and specialty clinic appointments; provide expert advice on chemotherapy therapeutics.
  • Serve as a trust‑wide resource on SACT, supporting advanced practitioners and non‑medical prescribers.
  • Act as an independent prescriber within your specialty area, including dose adjustments and monitoring of therapeutic range.
  • Lead clinical audits, contribute to research projects and support evidence‑based practice.
  • Perform teaching, supervision and training of junior pharmacists and other healthcare professionals.
  • Support line management and performance of junior pharmacists and pharmacy technicians.
  • Participate in 7‑day rota, bank holidays and on‑call duties as required.
Qualifications & experience
  • Registered pharmacist (GPhC) with a

    B.Pharm / BSc (Pharmacy) or MPharm.
  • Clinical Diploma or equivalent and membership of a relevant specialist pharmacist group.
  • Independent prescriber qualification or working towards one.
  • Extensive post‑registration experience in hospital pharmacy, particularly in oncology or other major clinical specialties.
  • Experience delivering specialist pharmacist review of cancer patients and providing clinical pharmacy advice.
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working, teaching, audit and research within a health service.
  • Leadership and management experience, including performance management and recruitment where relevant.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement medicines policy and service improvement initiatives.
  • Evidence of excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and the ability to influence at senior level.
  • Strong analytical and judgement skills, with the capacity to assess complex medication regimens, data and literature.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development and compliance with NHS and Trust regulations.
