Job Summary

Band 6 Stroke Nurse Practitioner position at Queens Medical Centre, a 250‑bed teaching hospital in Nottingham. The role is part of the Hyperacute Stroke Service and the senior nurse team, based mainly in the Emergency Department and the Level 1 hyperacute stroke unit.

Key focus is on patients admitted with a stroke. The practitioner works closely with the ED, mechanical thrombectomy and stroke research teams to provide high‑quality emergency care and to meet national stroke targets.

Responsibilities
  • Work as an autonomous practitioner responsible for triage and initial assessment, examination, initiation of treatments and investigations for suspected stroke patients in line with protocols.
  • Coordinate, review and evaluate care in collaboration with medical colleagues and the multidisciplinary team.
  • Handle the assessment and appropriate clinical transfer of patients with suspected stroke.
  • Manage the shift on the hyperacute stroke unit and act as senior manager during the absence of ward managers and other seniors.
  • Assist with data collection for the Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme (SSNAP) and work with senior stroke clinicians to improve SSNAP data and national stroke targets.
  • Administer and manage patients receiving thrombolysis and carry out mechanical thrombolysis as required.
  • Co‑ordinate emergency out‑of‑hours stroke patient management, ensuring timely management and data input.
  • Perform expanded practical clinical roles specific to the Stroke service (cannulation, venepuncture, swallowing assessments, ECG recording, CT scan and pathology requests).
  • Ensure timely and appropriate transfer and/or discharge of patients, providing a seamless patient pathway.
  • Liaise with patients and relatives to enable informed care choices and provide accurate and timely information.

Essential
  • Physically capable of performing a full range of nursing duties.
  • Post‑registration experience in acute stroke or neurology setting.
  • Evidence of multidisciplinary team working.
  • Proficient in ECG recording & interpretation, cannulation, venepuncture, swallowing assessments.
  • Competent in history taking and physical assessment.
  • Ability to work independently and manage own workload.
  • Knowledge of national stroke guidance for acute stroke management.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, computer literacy, motivation and negotiation skills, strong interpersonal skills.
  • RN (adult) or RGN registration with NMC; relevant post‑registration qualifications; first‑level degree or in‑progress; recognized teaching qualification; evidence of stroke/neurology experience.
  • Ability to perform a full range of physical duties, walk distances; able to work 24/7 across all shifts, cover sickness and non‑attendance on short notice, flexible attitude.
Desirable
  • Previous experience as an autonomous practitioner.
  • Up‑to‑date awareness of developments & treatments for stroke patients.
  • History taking and physical examination course; staff development experience; relevant management or leadership course; experience of change management.
  • Project management skills.
