Job Summary

We are delighted to offer the chance for a pharmacist to join our team as Specialist Pharmacist Practitioner in Adult Oncology, for a period of maternity cover. This role will join an existing team of pharmacist practitioners, embedded within the Oncology MDT in the clinic setting, as an integral part of the Oncology service. The post holder will be based at City campus of Nottingham University Hospitals and may be required to carry out clinics at our satellite oncology service at Kingsmill Hospital.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide a specialist level patient-facing clinical service to a defined caseload of patients.
  • Review patients in an outpatient clinic setting and prescribe systemic anticancer therapies (SACT) and supportive treatments.
  • Initiate, evaluate and modify a range of interventions to improve patient outcomes.
  • Improve standards of care and promote safe, evidence-based practice.
  • Act as a Trust-wide source of information on SACT and the wider speciality; support advanced practitioners and non‑medical prescribers.
  • Attend and actively participate in specialty ward rounds, board rounds, clinics and multidisciplinary team meetings.
  • Provide specialist advice and guidance on all issues relating to prescribing and therapeutics of medicines and chemotherapy for the specialty.
  • Critically evaluate published literature and medicines-related information to inform practice and patient‑care decisions.
  • Act as an independent prescriber in a specialist practice area and provide dose adjustment, advice and prescriptions for SACT medications.
  • Provide clinical input at specialist level to the Oncology Department and work alongside the medical and Advanced Practitioner team in prescribing for people being cared for in the Oncology Department.
  • Offer highly complex advice and guidance, ensuring safe rational and effective prescribing.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of prescribing and therapeutics for all services in the Cancer cluster.
  • Support oncology activity flow by providing prescribing support to outpatient and day‑case areas.
  • Manage the supply of medicines for individual patients during their stay, at discharge and for out‑patient visits where appropriate.
  • Request and interpret clinical tests to monitor and improve drug therapy effectiveness.
  • Proactively liaise with other members of the MDT to ensure safe use of medicines.
  • Make recommendations about medicines to improve patient outcomes and encourage adherence to hospital formulary and national guidelines.
  • Provide advice and guidance in relation to unlicensed medicines use and clinical trial medicines under the direction of the senior pharmacist for clinical trials.
  • Participate in clinical audits, research, teaching and training of undergraduate, postgraduate students and other healthcare professionals.
  • Line‑manage and support more junior pharmacists and Medicines Management Technicians in the Cancer cluster.
  • Contribute to the delivery of clinical pharmacy and medicines management services to the Oncology Department, including leading quality‑improvement initiatives and key performance indicators.
  • Assist in recruitment of new staff and support the appointment of a designated prescribing practitioner.
  • Participate in senior pharmacist on‑call rota and take part in a 7‑day shift rota, including weekends and bank holidays.
