Job Overview

An experienced and committed optometrist is required to join our team on a full‑time or part‑time basis. Optometrists at NUH work closely with a multidisciplinary team and are extensively involved in a range of extended roles, including Keratoconus, Cataract, Eye Casualty, PCO same‑day assessment and treatment service, Glaucoma, Macula and Diabetic clinics. The role offers the opportunity to enroll in an Advanced Clinical Practice Ophthalmology Level 7 apprenticeship with supported clinical experience and the possibility of progressing from Band 6 to Band 7.

The successful candidate will receive support for Independent Prescribing qualification and will contribute to the teaching of pre‑registration optometrists, postgraduate medics, orthoptic students and other health professionals.

Responsibilities

• Deliver core optometric services and a range of extended services to the highest standards of quality and care.

• Act as an autonomous practitioner in the assessment, diagnosis and management of patients of all ages, from pre‑term babies to the elderly, while adapting communication to patient needs.

• Participate in the delivery of specialist (extended‑role) optometric services such as cataract, eye casualty, PCO, glaucoma, Keratoconus, macula and diabetic clinic care.

• Work as an independent practitioner and serve as a clinical expert and mentor for junior staff in assessment and practice of these specialties.

• Undertake specific administrative duties as agreed with the Clinical Lead for Optometry.

Person Specification Qualifications and Training

Essential Criteria
  • Registration as an Optometrist with the General Optical Council
  • Membership of the College of Optometrists
Qualifications and Training – Desirable Criteria
  • Independent Prescribing qualification or desire to achieve one
  • City and Guilds or HSDA qualification in diabetic retinopathy screening
Experience

Essential Criteria
  • Previous hospital experience in a Band 6 or Band 7 role, or equivalent high‑street experience as an optometrist
  • Experience in clinical audit
  • Experience supervising trainee or junior optometrists
Experience – Desirable Criteria
  • Clinical experience across a range of clinics, including refraction, macula, diabetic, low vision, contact lens, glaucoma, cataract
