- Care experience is not mandatory, but an advantage; we offer full training and support to become a care assistant.
- Encourage every support worker to have a current UK driving licence due to the nature of the job.
- Induction includes necessary training such as Health and Safety, First Aid and Moving and Handling.

Responsibilities- Promote customer independent living and control over their life by involving them in all decision making.
- Provide physical assistance with personal care, including prompting with washing, bathing, showering etc.
- Support with eating and drinking; assist with or carry out meal preparation of service user’s choice. Ensure clients prepared and eat healthy, balanced diet and correct quantities.
- Prompt or administer medication in line with Break Barriers policy and customer’s doctor’s prescription.
- Provide support with or undertake household tasks including laundry and cleaning.
- Support customers with the care of their pets and light gardening duties when required.
- Support customers in the community with recreational activities or other activities such as shopping, visiting friends and family etc.
- Safeguard customers from abuse and discrimination. Training will be provided.
- Attend staff team meetings and mandatory training sessions. Contribute to an effective system of communication within the team.
- Communicate positively and effectively with customers, colleagues and any other group of people who may be part of the working environment such as customer’s parents or friends, social workers, agency workers, district nurses etc.
- Respect customer’s wishes and privacy and confidentiality.
- Work weekends and bank holidays as required.
- Undertake any other duties and responsibilities as requested in line with customer’s care needs.
- All duties carried out with due regard to Break Barriers policies and procedures including standards detailed by the Skills for Care Code of practice.
- Accountable for carrying out all duties with due regard to Break Barriers’ Equal & Diversity Policy.
- Processing personal data within Data Protection guidelines and confidentiality policies.
- Ensure service users retain individuality and personal dignity by promoting high standards of care and encouraging independence where appropriate.
- Ensure different cultural needs catered for sensitively.
- Respect the confidential nature of the work.
- Undertake such duties and responsibilities of equivalent nature, as may be determined by the Manager from time to time in consultation with the post holder.
- Ensure that Health and Safety and Equal Opportunities policies are implemented at all times.
- Attend formal and informal training opportunities to enhance understanding of service users’ needs and abilities.
- Assisting with shopping – completed on client’s request and a finance form must be completed with a receipt.
- Assist with mobility – use of hoist or other aids, assistance in standing and movement, dressing or assisting with any physical activity wherein the client needs support.
- Domestic duties – cleaning, emptying bins, washing where requested.
- Record keeping – MAR chart (for medication), log book, care plan updates.
- Care Certificate.
- Ability to work as a team member.
- Ability to work under own initiative.
- Excellent interpersonal skills.
- Understanding of other cultures and some familiarity with diversity.
- Ability to handle emergency situations.
- Basic numeracy & literacy skills.
