An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Maternity Ward Manager to join the Perinatal Service at Nottingham University Hospital. The post is permanent at 37.5 hours per week.
The Maternity Ward Manager will be responsible for leading and operationally running the maternity ward which consists of postnatal women. The successful candidate will work within the wider management team and closely with multidisciplinary teams across maternity to provide safe, high‑quality care.
The role provides strategic and operational leadership, ensuring delivery of safe, woman‑centred care aligned with best practice, organisational standards and professional guidelines. The post holder manages and develops a multidisciplinary team of midwives and support staff, maintains effective communication, fosters a positive collaborative environment, and leads staff development, performance management and resource planning.
Key responsibilities include 24‑hour responsibility for the ward, accountability for service delivery, quality assurance and continuous improvement, working with senior leadership to achieve clinical and organisational objectives. The Ward Manager has line‑management responsibilities and ensures all team members have a personal development plan.
Managerial- 24‑hour continuing responsibility for the ward and ensure that Trust Policies and Procedures are implemented.
- Exercise leadership, providing support and guidance where necessary to all healthcare professionals within the maternity team. In conjunction with the multidisciplinary team, produce and monitor standards of care for the specialty.
- Empower staff to create an environment that is challenging, stimulating and supportive, promoting lifelong learning in the improvement of women‑centred care.
- Be visible and accessible to staff, women and their families.
- Ensure high‑quality, evidence‑based care is offered to women and babies, in collaboration with the senior leadership team.
- Identify common issues affecting quality of care, devise clear action plans to address shortcomings and ensure agreed actions are undertaken.
- Investigate accidents and other untoward occurrences concerning women, relatives, visitors or staff that arise on the ward/department, reporting and recording accurately as required, according to agreed policies.
- Complete and monitor action plans and share learning from incidents.
- Be an effective leader and role model, ensuring women are involved in their care, can provide feedback and see improvements made as a result.
- Create and maintain a learning environment, support education and staff development through induction programmes, preceptorship and mandatory training.
- Monitor staff learning and development.
- Contribute towards maintaining an environment conducive to learning and development.
