There is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and motivated nurse to join our Paediatric Critical Care senior leadership team in a permanent position.
We are a 14-bed Paediatric Critical Care Unit comprising 8 Level 3 beds and 6 Level 2 beds. We care for children with a wide range of specialties and work closely with the Children’s Medical Emergency Transport (CoMET) service for the East Midlands. We are supported by the Paediatric Critical Care Education Team and collaborate with Nottingham University, providing learning opportunities for postgraduate nurses.
You must be an RSCN or RN Child qualified nurse with substantial experience in a Paediatric Critical Care environment at Band 6 level. You must hold a recognised Critical Care qualification and Mentors and Assessors qualification. You will be expected to lead a team, deputise and coordinate care on the Unit and support the PCCU Matron. You should demonstrate excellent organisational skills and support a cohort of Band 5 and 6 nurses and the wider admin team that support the PCCU.

Main duties of the jobThe post holder will work as part of the Paediatric Critical Care nursing team and will be part of a team of Band 7 nurses who take managerial, professional and clinical responsibility for the PCCU. They will have 24-hour responsibility for the management and delivery of care within PCCU and will deputise for the PCCU Matron when requested, including taking responsibility for Children’s Services when delegated by the Senior Nurse/Head Nurse.
Role: 37.5 hours per week. Part-time hours considered with a minimum of 28.45 hours (approximately 10 shifts per month).
The clinical Band 7 role is both clinical and operational. Clinically, the role covers the full range of shifts, leading the clinical team and working with the wider PCCU MDT. Operationally, the role rotates between the Band 7 team and involves a 4–8 week rota covering core hours, with management and leadership responsibilities to support the PCCU Matron.

Detailed job description and main responsibilitiesThe post holder will act as Senior Sister/Charge Nurse and is expected to:
• Lead by example, regularly take charge of the Unit, and ensure care standards and the environment are maintained at a high level.
• Provide regular direct clinical care and use experience to support clinical and non-clinical governance.
• Support and lead a cohort of Band 6 and 5 nurses and admin staff, conduct yearly appraisals, and ensure staff training is up to date.
• Be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).
