Overview
Operating Room Circulator (Full-time/Part-time) at Novi Surgery Center. Provides direct patient care to pediatric through geriatric populations in the perioperative environment. Maintains communication with the surgeon and anesthesiologist throughout procedures and participates in performance improvement activities. Assists with operating room equipment and inventory and monitors patient health status during the perioperative phase.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Assess the physiological health status of the patient.
- Verify the operative procedure prior to procedure using consent forms, patient statements, and surgeon verification.
- Note the condition of the skin for rashes, bruises, lesions, and previous incisions.
- Determine mobility of the body using patient statements, range of motion, and the history and physical.
- Report deviations of diagnostic studies such as lab or radiology reports.
- Verify pre-operative vital signs upon admission to surgery (blood pressure, pulse, respirations, pulse oximetry, pain, temperature).
- Identify presence of prostheses (e.g., dentures, pacemaker, joint prosthesis/implants).
- Note nutritional status (e.g., NPO).
- Verify allergies to medication, food, or chemicals.
- Communicate and document physiological data to other members of the surgical and health care team, including data relevant to discharge planning.
- Formulate nursing diagnoses based on health data and develop a plan of care aligned with nursing actions to achieve patient goals.
- Provide positioning aids during the intraoperative phase to prevent skin breakdown or impairment of the nervous or vascular system.
- Provide equipment to ensure patient safety regarding electrosurgery and coordinate use of supplies and equipment for intraoperative care.
- Organize nursing activities in logical sequence and prioritize nursing actions; coordinate patient care needs with the team.
- Assign activities to appropriate personnel based on qualifications and patient needs.
- Maintain required certifications (BLS/ACLS) and respond effectively in emergencies.
- Communicate and document the patient’s plan of care to the surgical and health care team, including information relevant to discharge planning.
- Maintain a sterile field, apply aseptic technique, and distinguish clean versus sterile areas; initiate corrective action when breaks occur; maintain sterility of opened items for the procedure.
- Adhere to dress code for peri-operative areas; monitor movement around the sterile field; document environmental controls and any breaks in technique.
- Provide equipment and supplies based on patient needs; anticipate equipment, select items in a timely and cost-effective manner, and verify equipment functionality before use.
- Operate mechanical, electrical, and powered equipment per manufacturer instructions and Novi Surgery Center policy; remove malfunctioning equipment from service when needed.
- Perform counts of sponges, sharps, and instruments according to policy; initiate corrective action as required and document results.
- Administer drugs and solutions as prescribed and document administration according to policy.
- Physiologically monitor the patient during the peri-operative phase and respond to changes with appropriate nursing actions or physician orders.
- Monitor and control the peri-operative environment (temperature, sensory stimuli, traffic, noise); adhere to safety policies and sanitation policies including waste disposal.
- Respect patient rights and maintain patient safety and confidentiality; document provision of patient rights as appropriate.
- Develop outcome criteria and measures and communicate progress to the team, including discharge planning considerations.
- Act as a resource for other staff and participate in teamwork; follow OSHA Universal Precautions and wear appropriate PPE; be flexible with shift times and cross-train for nursing functions.
- Follow AORN/ASPAN/APIC standards and Novi Surgery Center policies at all times; perform effectively in emergency situations.
- Graduate of an accredited school of nursing.
- Current Registered Nurse licensure in the State of Michigan.
- Current BLS and ACLS certification (or within six months of hire).
- Follows AORN, ASPAN, and APIC standards.
- Minimum of one (1) year work experience in an operating room.
- Prior knowledge working with sterile instrumentation and sterile fields.
Able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
Other SkillsBasic computer knowledge.
Physical Requirements- Transferring patients to and from and repositioning on an OR table; lifting and holding patients’ extremities.
- Standing for long periods and sustaining awkward positions; lifting and moving equipment.
