Role SummaryThe Community Liaison functions as part of the Community Programs team under the Office of Medical Education. The position supports all community immersion components of the Human Dimension (HD) Course, particularly the Human Dimension Voices Program (HDVP). Medical students are paired with individuals and families in the community and the Community Liaison serves as a continuity point of contact throughout the curriculum.
Responsibilities include network building, supporting advocacy efforts, and providing feedback on HD program implementation. The role analyzes community health needs, builds relationships with community agencies, and interfaces with faculty, course directors, students, and community agencies. The position is based in Nutley, NJ, is a hybrid role (3 days onsite per week) and requires travel across northern New Jersey. The work schedule is 9:00 am–4:45 pm with occasional earlier shifts.
This is a two‑year grant‑funded position (ending June 27, 2028) with potential for continued employment afterward.
- Recruit families via community outreach and other avenues for the SOM Human Dimension course.
- Support the team’s community engagement events on campus and in the community.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to medical students regarding relationships with program participants, monitor visits, and assist with relationship building and resource finding.
- Assist School of Medicine Faculty in supporting students.
- Build relationships with community agencies to analyze and determine services the SOM can provide.
- Make connections between community residents, support advocacy efforts, and provide feedback on HD course implementation.
- Partner with the Community Outreach department to determine opportunities for students and resources for families.
- Review and analyze population health information to contribute to program decision‑making.
- Analyze proximity to healthcare and demographics to enhance population health initiatives.
- Conduct phone interviews and in‑home safety screenings to ensure student placement in a safe environment.
- Ensure all logistical aspects related to safety screenings and agency needs are completed timely and accurately.
- Recommend outreach activities to address identified community health needs, including orientations, community engagement sessions, trainings, and presentations.
- Perform other duties and projects as assigned.
- Adhere to HMH organizational competencies and standards of behavior.
Skills and Abilities
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Public Health, or a related field; or a high school diploma, GED, or equivalent with a minimum of 4 years related experience.
- Experience working with community‑based organizations.
- Ability to assess physical and emotional safety of environments.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Analytical and evaluation skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient computer skills, including Microsoft Office and/or Google Workspace.
Skills And Abilities
Preferred
- Bilingual in Spanish.
- Valid driver’s license from a U.S. state.
Minimum annual rate of $48,896.64. This is a good‑faith estimate of the minimum base pay and does not reflect the full value of HMH’s market‑competitive total rewards package.
Additional compensation information is available during the hiring process and may include performance incentives, bonuses, or commissions. Shift differentials may apply for evening, night, or weekend shifts.
