Position: Security Officer I Casual Weekends

Job Description

The Security Officer I reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards. Under the direction of the Security Leadership, this position is responsible for adhering to established policies and procedures to protect the hospital from theft and damage;

provides protection for patients, visitors, Associates, and medical staff; investigates and quells disturbances; restrains patients upon proper direction and assistance of medical/clinical staff.

Responsibilities
  • Investigate and quell hospital incidents and disturbances to maintain patient, visitor, and employee security.
  • Complete descriptive reports for supervisory personnel.
  • Notify appropriate city officials (police and fire) and prepare descriptive reports for supervisory personnel.
  • Perform regular perimeter and internal patrols of the hospital buildings and grounds to assure protection of patients and property and to prevent the entry of unauthorized persons.
  • Conduct investigations into incidents of hazardous conditions, reported theft, criminal activity, and any other security or safety issues as reported.
  • Monitor the access control system, fire and duress alarms, and the security video system.
  • Control traffic as necessary to assure access for emergency vehicles and access for patients and visitors.
  • Control traffic during incidents and for helicopter transports.
  • Maintain security of restricted areas by checking and locking doors according to pre‑set schedules or as required by special circumstances.
  • Provide escorts for staff to their vehicles as requested.
  • Deliver deceased bodies to the morgue and release them to authorized persons in accordance with established policies.
  • Respond to all emergency codes in accordance with department specific guidelines.
  • Alert the department Manager of any activities or deviations from departmental standards that may require disciplinary action or follow‑up.
  • Enforce all hospital policies and procedures as directed.
  • Display a competent and professional service image while remaining approachable and service‑oriented at all times.
  • Encourage people to freely ask for assistance or convey information that may allow prevention of problems or reduce exposure of the hospital to damage or loss.
  • Conduct contraband searches for patient and employee safety as needed.
  • Monitor individuals or situations to ensure patient and employee safety as needed.
  • Oversee staff parking permit process, and monitor compliance per established policy and procedure.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications Required
  • High‑school diploma or GED.
  • Successful completion of IAHSS Basic exam within 90 days of hire.
  • Maintain IAHSS Basic certification.
  • Current Basic Life Support certification through American Heart Association within 9 months of hire.
  • Successful completion of Northwestern Medicine Defensive Tactics in Healthcare within 6 months of hire.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills necessary to interact effectively with a variety of individuals, including employees, medical staff, patients, visitors, law enforcement and other outside agencies.
  • Writing skills necessary to complete reports and paperwork that meets departmental standards.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Physical ability and knowledge of how to operate a motor vehicle.
Physical Demands Requirement
  • Lift/carry up to 65 pounds and apply a push/pull force of up to 75 pounds.
  • Stand and walk during much of the work shift patrolling hospital buildings and grounds.
