Job SummaryThe Certified Ophthalmic Technician is either a Certified or Registered Medical Assistant. The role assists ophthalmologists, physicians, and other clinical staff in providing patient care and essential back‑office duties. The position works under the delegation of a licensed practitioner to perform duties appropriate to the licensure level, ensuring the highest standard of service for patients.
Responsibilities- Medical Assistant – Certified (MA‑C)
- Perform clinical and clerical functions as necessary.
- Provide direct clinical support to a provider and staff.
- Telephone and in‑person screening limited to intake and gathering of information.
- Ensure compliance of physician orders, pre‑authorization and other documentation by entering information into the EMR.
- Review and route patient or caregiver, provider, and fax calls to the appropriate party.
- Obtain vital signs and follow the intake process for visits.
- Prepare and assist with minor office procedures, specialty exams and in‑office treatments.
- Administer medication and vaccinations with a provider order for both children and adults.
- Perform EKGs, PFTs, ear lavage and other point‑of‑care testing as requested by the provider.
- Maintain exam rooms, stock and clean after every visit.
- Provide additional office support as needed.
- Attend and participate in all clinical staff and staff meetings.
- Attend and/or complete mandatory in‑service education for clinic staff.
- Identify personal educational needs.
- Maintain BLS and RQI standards as required by the organization.
- Medical Assistant – Registered (MA‑R)
- Demonstrate competency and perform only the medical tasks listed on the current Healthcare Practitioner Endorsement under the supervision of a healthcare practitioner, as defined in RCW .
- Perform duties delegated by an authorized healthcare practitioner, including maintaining medication and immunization records, screening and following up on test results, diagnostic testing and electrocardiography, waived laboratory testing under CLIA, and administering eye drops, topical ointments, and vaccines (including multidose).
- Administer medication according to a written order from the healthcare practitioner for drugs that are limited to legend drugs, vaccines, and Schedule III through V controlled substances, and for intramuscular injections, following immediate supervision.
- Complete and submit an updated Healthcare Practitioner Endorsement to the Washington State Department of Health within 30 days of any changes to delegated duties or supervision.
- Send a copy of any updated endorsement and written verification that the endorsement is accepted and active with the Washington State Department of Health to Human Resources.
- Maintain active Washington Medical Assistant Registration within 60 days of hire.
- Submit and retain all checklists, competencies, and CLIA assignments supervised by a healthcare practitioner within 60 days of hire.
- Other Responsibilities
- Review and route incoming faxes to the appropriate party.
- Assist ophthalmologists during examinations as needed.
- Document patient records and communicate findings to ophthalmologists.
- Maintain equipment and supplies.
- Educate patients on post‑care instructions and follow‑up appointments.

- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of a Medical Assistant Program (MA‑C) or accredited school for medical assistants (MA‑R).
- Training & Experience
- Minimum one (1) year experience as a medical assistant in a clinic setting.
- Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) by JCAHPO at hire.
- Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) by JCAHPO within one (1) year from hire date.
- Certificates, Licenses & Registrations
- MA‑C: WA State Medical Assistant Certification;
American Heart Association BLS HCP. - MA‑R:
Submission of Medical Assistant – Registered Healthcare Practitioner Endorsement with the Washington Department of Health within 7 days of the start date; copy to Human Resources; active Washington Medical Assistant Registration within 60 days of hire; completion of CLIA competencies within 60 days.
