The Recreation Leader plays an active role in instructing and facilitating City of Oak Harbor Parks and Recreation programs for youth and adults, ensuring each activity is engaging, safe, and inclusive. Recreation Leaders facilitate programs within their area of expertise—such as sports, arts, fitness, or STEM—while providing clear guidance, encouragement, and support to participants of all ages and skill levels. Working under the direction of the Recreation Coordinator, the Recreation Leaders serve as energetic ambassadors for recreation, guiding participants, maintaining safety standards, managing supplies, and providing exceptional customer service.

Responsibilities
  • Assist in the implementation of youth and adult recreational programs, under direction of the Recreation Coordinator.
  • Independently facilitate and lead assigned recreational activities, including implementing and enforcing age‑appropriate conduct standards in accordance with department policy to ensure a safe and positive program environment.
  • Maintain a fun, safe and supportive environment for all participants to learn and grow at their own pace and allow participants of all skill and experience levels to enjoy the activities provided.
  • Encourage participation through effective communication of program information, supportive guidance during recreational activities, and displaying a passion for recreational activities with the emphasis on learning and growing.
  • Maintain accurate records of participant attendance, progress or any other incidents that occur during activities. Assist with onsite registration where applicable.
  • Learn and enforce rules and safety standards and observe necessary precautions so all recreational activities provide the highest level of safety possible while maintaining an engaging pace for participants. Render routine first aid in cases of minor injury.
  • Request and maintain needed supplies and equipment required for successful programs, adhering to the appropriate program budget.
  • Set up before and clean up after all recreational programs to allow the use of shared spaces by multiple groups and activities.
  • Act as the facility attendant for City facilities during after‑hours programs, events, and private rentals, ensuring adherence to policies, safety standards, and proper facility use.
  • Demonstrate the highest level of customer service and an energetic, positive attitude towards participants and their families.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
  • Assist in the planning and development of new recreational programs and activities.
  • Assist with City of Oak Harbor Parks and Recreation events and represent the City of Oak Harbor Park and Recreation at various community events.
  • May operate a city vehicle for the purpose of transporting program participants or supplies in related program activities.

  • Carry, set up and clean up supplies and equipment.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Minimum age of 18 years.
  • High School diploma or GED equivalent.
  • City‑provided training to obtain and maintain CPR and First Aid Certification before the first day of camp.
