Oakridge Public Schools is seeking a dynamic, skilled, and passionate Director of Bands to lead our comprehensive school band program for grades spanning upper elementary through high school. The ideal candidate will be a visionary music educator with a strong ability to inspire student musicians, build a tradition of excellence, and foster a positive, inclusive, and disciplined learning environment. This position is responsible for directing and managing all aspects of the high school’s instrumental music program, including the marching band, concert ensembles, jazz band, and other ensembles.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Music Education from an accredited college or university and possess or be eligible for a valid Michigan teaching certificate with a K-12 endorsement in music education (JQ or JX).
- Preferred: Minimum of 3-5 years of successful experience as a high school band director, with documented success in marching and concert ensembles.
Knowledge & Skills
- Musicianship: Strong conducting skills and advanced proficiency on at least one primary instrument, with functional knowledge of all brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments.
- Pedagogy: Deep understanding of instrumental pedagogy, rehearsal techniques, and diverse music literature for high school ensembles.
- Technology: Proficiency with music notation software, drill‑writing software, and basic office/communication software.
- Leadership: Excellent leadership and organizational skills; ability to manage a large, multifaceted program and motivate students.
- Communication: Strong interpersonal and communication skills (written and verbal) for effective interaction with students, parents, colleagues, and the community.
Instructional & Programmatic Leadership
- Direct Ensembles: Plan, rehearse, and direct all instrumental ensembles, including the marching band, concert band(s) (e.g., Symphonic Band, Wind Ensemble), and jazz ensemble(s).
- Curriculum: Develop and implement a comprehensive, sequential, and standards‑based music curriculum that caters to a range of student abilities.
- Music Theory: Teach fundamental and advanced concepts of music theory, music history, and music appreciation.
- Marching Band: Organize and lead all aspects of the marching band, including:
- Designing and teaching marching drill and musical arrangements.
- Coordinating and supervising summer band camp.
- Preparing for and directing performances at football games, pep rallies, and community parades.
- Competitions & Festivals: Prepare and register students for all eligible district, regional, and state music festivals, competitions, and honor bands (e.g., Solo & Ensemble, Large Group Performance Evaluation).
- Student Assessment: Evaluate student progress through regular performance assessments, playing tests, and written work, providing constructive feedback for growth.
Administrative & Management
- Budget & Finance: Manage the band program budget, including purchasing, requisitions, and travel expenses, in accordance with district policy.
- Fundraising: Coordinate and oversee all program‑related fundraising efforts in collaboration with the school administration and Band Booster organization.
- Inventory Management: Maintain a complete inventory of all school‑owned property, including instruments, uniforms, music, and equipment. Manage the music library and oversee the repair and maintenance of instruments.
- Communication: Serve as the primary communicator for the band program. Maintain regular, positive communication with students, parents, school staff, and the community.
- Booster & Community Relations: Act as the faculty liaison to the Band Booster organization, attending meetings and working collaboratively to support the program’s goals.
