The Transportation and Waste Management Division at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Transportation Specialist. This position is responsible for a range of operational activities in the packaging and transportation arena at ORNL; therefore, ensuring that these activities are in compliance with the applicable regulations.

Major Duties/Responsibilities
  • Responsible for proper transportation classification, documentation, and packaging of off-site shipments, including, but not limited to, radioactive and hazardous materials, classified materials, stable isotopes shipments, international shipments and non-hazardous materials as needed.
  • Ensures such shipments are in compliance with applicable Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), International Air Transport Association (IATA), Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Department of Commerce and state regulations.
  • Ensures shipments are in compliance with the Department of Energy (DOE) Orders, and ORNL policy and procedures
  • Determines DOT/IATA classifications and selects proper packaging, marking, labeling and placarding.
  • Provides packaging and transportation guidance and instructions (written and/or verbal) for shipping campaigns and single shipments.
  • Interfaces and communicates transportation requirements to various organizations and multiple vendors.
  • Performs packaging and transportation performance assessments. Provides guidance on carrier contract negotiations.
  • An ability to understand and interpret federal, state, local, and international regulations, DOE Orders and ORNL directives required.

Basic Qualifications
  • A BS degree in transportation management, environmental sciences, or a related technical field with 2 years of relevant experience working with hazardous materials.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with DOE transportation and packaging orders.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  • Ability to function well in a fast-paced technical environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
  • A thorough understanding of traffic management principles and practices.
  • Chemistry background.
  • Advanced DOT Hazardous Materials shipper certification training, including radioactive materials.
  • IATA Dangerous Goods shipper certification including radioactive materials.
Special Requirements
  • Q clearance:
    This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
