We are seeking a Senior Project Engineer who will focus on designing, deploying, and improving instruments for the neutron science community at ORNL’s High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). This position resides in the Instrument Project Engineering Group in the Neutron Technologies Engineering Section, Neutron Technologies Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As part of our engineering team, you will have the opportunity to design, procure, and oversee installation and commissioning of new instruments and upgrades to existing instruments, including the design of one-of-a-kind and first-of-a-kind components and systems. Typical instrument components include vacuum and/or pressure vessels, equipment positioning devices, personnel safety systems, neutron and biological shielding, optical components and more.

A complete instrument design requires expertise in many disciplines such as structural and civil engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical and electronics engineering, vacuum and pressure systems, nuclear engineering, radiological protection, and neutron sciences to execute effectively. A Senior Project Engineer will often engage and coordinate efforts from experts in these and other technical fields during the execution of a project. As such, the position requires a person with strong communication skills and a strong engineering base who can contribute technically within their specialty and who also has the ability to assemble, direct, and work with other technical specialists in the execution of projects.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

Lead engineering design and analysis of complex mechanical systems, from initial concept through detailed design, fabrication, installation, and commissioning, for new instrument developments and major upgrades at SNS and HFIR.

Define project objectives and technical requirements, develop project execution plans, and manage projects to scope, schedule, and budget; produce and follow cost and schedule estimates.

Oversee procurement, fabrication, and installation of components and systems; plan and supervise validation testing.

Direct work planning and hazard evaluation activities, serving as the responsible engineer of record for assigned scope.

Provide technical direction to designers, engineers, and other technical staff, and lead multidisciplinary activities; review deliverables to ensure engineering standards and customer requirements are met.

Ensure designs and installations meet industry, DOE, and ORNL codes and standards for functionality, quality, health, and safety.

Participate in R&D, prototyping, and testing of proposed new equipment.

Produce technical reports and design documentation, prepare presentations for design reviews and advisory committees, and communicate technical status and performance to ORNL management.

Deliver ORNL’s mission by aligning behaviors, priorities, and interactions with our core values of Impact, Integrity, Teamwork, Safety, and Service. Promote equal opportunity by fostering a respectful workplace – in how we treat one another, work together, and measure success.

Basic Qualifications:

A BS in mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, civil engineering, engineering science, or a related field and a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience

Experience in Computer Aided Design (CAD)

Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary technical teams and managing and executing complex, structured technical projects

Preferred Qualifications:

An MS in mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering, civil engineering, engineering science, or a related discipline

Experience with neutron scattering instruments…
