Senior Artificial Intelligence Software Engineer (Hybrid Eligible)

We’re hiring an AI Developer having AI/ML development and deployment skills! The position and its focus are to design, develop and move to production AI/ML tools and analytics that enhance and evolve business operations and scientific decision-making capability and related activities lified applicants will have a solid foundation of Generative AI and Machine Learning skills. This position resides in the AI Operations Program office within the Application Development Division of the Information Technology Services Directorate.

Our AI/ML models are heavily centered on Microsoft Azure and related AI cloud technologies with High Performance Computing (HPC) for on premise AI environments and Azure, AWS, and GCP for off premise environments.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

• Development and support of models utilizing AI/ML and Microsoft Azure related Power apps, including CoPilot Studio.
• Collaboration with business and scientific/technical stakeholders to understand needs and gather detailed actionable requirements.
• Analysis of emerging trends and technologies to provide recommendations for roadmaps and AI strategy. This includes Generative AI and ML techniques and solution methods. LLM/GPT CI/CD pipelines and diagnostic monitoring for clients or set up for client self-monitoring.
• Ethical and responsible use of AI in line with ORNL policy and guidelines.
• Collaboration with other DOE labs and private sector companies to understand and mature ORNL capabilities.
• Become the Go-To DOE lab for AI/ML best practices across lab domains.
• Adherence to ORNL and ITSD software quality assurance standards and ITIL effective practices.
• Support of and adherence to ORNL and ITSD project management requirements and Guidance for Researchers and general users of AI models within ORNL guidelines.

Basic Qualifications:

• A BS in computer science, data science, artificial intelligence, business analytics management, applied statistical analytics, or a related field of study and eight (8) to twelve (12) years of aligned experience, with the last 2-3 years in the AI/ML arena, is required for consideration. An overall combination of equivalent experience may be considered.
  • Masters and PhD degree holders in the same fields of study are also encouraged to apply:
    • Masters’ holders should have seven (7) to ten (10) years of aligned experience with the last 2-3 years in the AI/ML arena.
    • PhD holders should have four (4) to six (6) years of relevant and aligned experience with the last 2-3 years in the AI/ML arena.
• Prior demonstrated AI/ML development and deployment in independent cloud and on-premise environments including requirements gathering, design, and deployment of reporting solutions.
• The candidate must demonstrate:
  • experience creating AI solutions like Azure AI Foundry, MS Azure Open AI Studio, Azure SQL, and Open Source LLMs like Meta's LLama family.
  • experience with Microsoft CoPilot, OpenAI tools and API’s for GPT creation, Hugging Face, Lang Chain, Large Language Models, Generative AI or similar tools.
  • a deeply curious approach toward novel development, planning, support, design, modification and testing of data warehouse cubes, models, dimensions, measures, views and reports,
  • being a results-motivated, curious, self-starter who is comfortable working in a project-based environment,

  • a strong emphasis in delighting customer and end-user needs.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Active DOE Q clearance.
• Understanding of multidimensional and tabular modelling, vector databases, Graph DB.
• Experience using Microsoft Visual Studio or Visual Studio Code, Python, PyTorch, Tensor Flow.
