Position: Network Engineer (Security Programs Group)

Overview

The Laboratory Protection Division is seeking a qualified Security Network Engineer. In this role, you'll ensure the stability, performance, and secure operation of the network protecting DOE assets. You'll design, implement, maintain, and troubleshoot network infrastructures, managing devices like routers, switches, and firewalls, while closely collaborating with security and operational technology teams. The position, which reports to the Security Systems Team Leader in the ORNL Security Programs Group, aims to ensure compliance with Department of Energy security regulations.

Duties/Responsibilities
  • Responsible for designing, configuring, and troubleshooting network systems, as well as maintaining computer networks, switches, routers, firewalls, and other physical hardware devices.
  • Leads, coordinates, and schedules work activities for the security network that supports security systems throughout the ORNL site.
  • Provides recommendations for technology enhancements and improvements, assesses new technological solutions and performs cost and budget preparation.
  • Creates and maintains configuration management documentation and as-built drawings for all security network topology.
  • Supports multiple security systems to include access control systems, intrusion detection and alarm systems, video assessment and surveillance systems, automated barriers, and the associated servers and workstations.
  • Assists management in process reviews and audits, conducts internal self-assessments, and resolves any findings derived from these processes.
  • Ensures that 24/7 technical support is provided for all security network-related issues, off-normal events are reviewed and resolved, and appropriate corrective actions are performed.
  • Maintains knowledge of all applicable networking and security regulations needed to support the laboratory mission.

Basic Qualifications
  • BS degree in engineering, computer science, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in network administration and engineer. An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with DOE Orders and associated network industry standards such as NIST and ISO.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with an ability to work with numerous stakeholders.
  • Industry-recognized networking certification, such as CCNA or CCNP.
  • Experience with Windows server administration.
  • Strong communications skills, with the ability to successfully interact with peers, stakeholders, and security system engineers.
  • Proven aptitude to analyze and interpret data to drive network enhancements to ensure performance, scalability, and alignment with organizational objectives.
  • Strong knowledge of network design, development, and testing techniques.
  • Ability to handle complex designs with precision, and the ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in a collaborative team.
Special Requirements
  • HSPD-12 PIV badge:
    This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain an HSPD-12 PIV badge.
  • Q clearance:
    This position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
