Role
Summary:
The technician will be assigned full‑time (40 hours weekly) to support the Development Metallurgical Engineering & Processing group, performing hands‑on activities in sample preparation, foundry operations, inventory management, and furnace maintenance.
- Routine hands‑on work includes preparation of samples for metallographic examination (sawing, mounting, grinding, polishing, etching) using optical microscopes and other analytical instruments.
- General foundry activities: melting and casting, sawing, shearing, drilling, coating of crucibles and molds, cleaning of materials (solvent, acid, caustic), pressing and swaging, heat treating of depleted uranium and alloys.
- Other activities: inventory of materials (uranium, chemicals, equipment), handling/packaging of wastes (radiological/non‑radiological), handling gas cylinders, housekeeping and cleaning of work areas.
- Cleaning furnaces, replacing thermocouples, sensors and gauges, and furnace leak checking.
- Associates or higher degree in a technical field and 10–15 years of related experience or high school diploma and 20+ years of relevant experience; in-depth knowledge and skill; may lead other technicians.
- Q Clearance.
- Additional requirements:
- Maintaining Department of Energy clearance;
Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designation requiring random drug testing; pre‑employment drug screen. - Post‑offer pre‑employment drug test for external applicants.
