Postdoctoral Research Associate – Quantum Algorithms for Materials Simulations
We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to develop and implement novel quantum algorithms for materials simulations, focusing on error‑corrected methods for future fault‑tolerant quantum computing. The role involves algorithm design, numerical implementation on hybrid quantum‑classical hardware, and collaboration with researchers in quantum computing and condensed matter physics.
Major Duties / Responsibilities
- Design and test novel quantum algorithms for materials simulations.
- Develop resource estimates for implementing these algorithms on quantum hardware.
- Perform hybrid quantum‑classical simulations for fermionic and Hubbard‑like materials models.
- Collaborate within a multidisciplinary research environment linking models and algorithms with innovative materials simulations.
- Author peer‑reviewed papers and represent the organization at workshops and conferences.
Basic Qualifications
- Ph.D. in physics, computer science, or a related field earned within the past 5 years.
- Strong background in quantum computing and quantum algorithms.
- Background in quantum many‑body theory for condensed matter systems.
- Experience developing quantum algorithms to study model Hamiltonians.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with error‑corrected methods for fault‑tolerant quantum computing.
- Experience with common quantum programming languages.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Experience working in a multidisciplinary research environment.
- Demonstrated written and oral communication skills, a proven publication record, and effective interpersonal skills.
Special Requirements
The candidate must have earned their Ph.D. within five years of the application date and complete all degree requirements before starting the appointment. The appointment is up to 24 months, with potential extension subject to performance and funding availability.
Application Instructions
- Submit two letters of reference.
- Upload documents to your profile via jobs.ornl.gov or email to Postdoc recruitment with the position number 15721 in the subject line.
Security, Credentialing, and Eligibility Requirements
Employment requires Real‑ and a federal PIV card, as mandated by DOE and HSPD‑12. A background check and PIV credential are required. Foreign national candidates must meet residency requirements unless they obtain an LSSO risk determination.
