Research Scientist – Quantum Transduction and Hybrid Quantum Systems

OverviewThe Materials Science and Technology Division of the Physical Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for a research staff position in quantum information science. We seek outstanding candidates with expertise in quantum information science and condensed matter physics. Candidates that seek to build a research program focused on quantum state transduction are strongly preferred. The ideal candidate is expected to develop and lead research efforts focused on the transduction of quantum information between light, spins, and microwave circuits.
The successful candidate will join the multidisciplinary Quantum Heterostructures Group dedicated to developing and characterizing novel quantum devices in collaboration with theory and experimental quantum information science efforts in research programs across the DOE Office of Science. Planned research activities will be supported with internal ORNL investments and the Department of Energy (DOE) funded Basic Energy Sciences (BES) Materials Sciences and Engineering (MSE) Program.
Duties / Responsibilities
- Develop new approaches to quantum state transduction.
- Develop hybrid quantum device architectures.
- Partner with existing quantum computing and networking efforts at the Laboratory to enable heterogeneous quantum hardware.
- Present and report research results and publish scientific results in peer‑reviewed journals in a timely fashion.
- Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program requirements.
- Maintain strong dedication to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics.
- Work with others to maintain a high level of scientific productivity.

- A PhD in quantum science, physics, materials science, or a closely related science discipline.
- A minimum of two years of experience in a related field.
- A strong record of productive and creative research proven by publications in peer‑reviewed journals and presentations at major conferences.
- Experience leading interdisciplinary research projects.
- Experience working with DOE sponsors.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to communicate to an international scientific audience.
- Ability to work with a measure of autonomy in a team environment.
