DescriptionThe Security Officer I role reflects the mission, vision, and values of Northwestern Medicine. This position adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and regulatory standards. Under the direction of Security Leadership, the officer protects the hospital from theft and damage; safeguards patients, visitors, associates, and medical staff; investigates and resolves disturbances;
and restrains patients when directed by medical/clinical staff.
Hours: This is a casual position; the hours per week are not guaranteed. Days are required every Saturday and Sunday for the following shifts: 6 am‑10 am and 4 pm‑8 pm.
Responsibilities- Investigates and quells hospital incidents and disturbances to maintain security for patients, visitors, and employees.
- Completes descriptive reports for supervisory personnel.
- Notifies appropriate city officials (police and fire) and prepares reports.
- Performs regular perimeter and internal patrols of the hospital buildings and grounds, both on foot and mobile.
- Conducts investigations into hazardous conditions, reported theft, criminal activity, and other security or safety issues.
- Monitors the access control system, fire and duress alarms, and the security video system.
- Controls traffic to ensure access for emergency vehicles and visitors during incidents and helicopter transports.
- Maintains security of restricted areas by checking and locking doors per pre‑set schedules or special circumstances.
- Provides escorts for staff to their vehicles as requested.
- Delivers deceased bodies to the morgue and releases them according to established policies.
- Responds to all emergency codes per department guidelines.
- Alerts the department manager of any activities deviating from standards that may require disciplinary action.
- Enforces all hospital policies and procedures as directed.
- Displays a competent, professional, and approachable service image at all times.
- Conducts contraband searches for patient and employee safety as needed.
- Monitors individuals or situations to ensure patient and employee safety.
- Oversees staff parking permit process and monitors compliance.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
- High‑school diploma or GED.
- Successful completion of IAHSS Basic exam within 90 days of hire.
- Maintain IAHSS Basic certification.
- Current Basic Life Support certification through American Heart Association within 9 months of hire.
- Successful completion of Northwestern Medicine Defensive Tactics in Healthcare within 6 months of hire.
- Interpersonal and communication skills to interact effectively with employees, medical staff, patients, visitors, law enforcement and other agencies.
- Writing skills to complete reports and paperwork meeting departmental standards.
- Valid driver’s license.
- Physical ability to operate a motor vehicle.
- Physical Demands:
- Lift/carry up to 65 pounds; push/pull up to 75 pounds.
- Stand and walk during most of the shift patrolling hospital buildings and grounds.
- Respond quickly to emergencies, including stair climbing and other exertion.
- Lift and assist with heavy objects occasionally.
- Experience in healthcare security, police work, or military service.
- Valid FOID card.
- Associate or Bachelor’s degree.
