Position: Maintenance Worker I (Parks Division)

Job Summary

Performs semi skilled level work in the maintenance of City parks and green areas.
This position will be assigned to specifically maintain T.L. Davis Sports Complex, Greger Sports Park & Oakdale Community Park. They will be considered the resident gardeners for these locations. Their primary duties will include but not be limited to all landscape maintenance tasks, preventative maintenance task, irrigation repair, monitoring and adjustment. The expectation will be for these positions to take full maintenance ownership of the three locations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Inspects park grounds, structures, medians and facilities for safety, appearance and vandalism.
  • Cleans and clears park grounds, structures and playing fields of debris and hazardous conditions.
  • Sets up parks for special events.
  • Plants and maintains trees, shrubs and plants.
  • Clears sites of weeds.
  • Operates light grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Seeds and fertilizes lawns and parks.
  • Mows parks and lawns.
  • Trims and prunes trees.
  • Cleans storm drains.
  • Assists public works maintenance crews working on streets, water and sewer lines and other public works.
  • Orders supplies and equipment for work projects.
  • Maintains awareness of safety procedures and practices them on work assignments.
  • Operates hand and power tools and motorized equipment used in parks maintenance work.
  • Sets up traffic control devices at work sites.
  • Responds to citizen complaints and answers questions.
  • Maintains hand and power tools and other equipment in working condition.
  • Maintains logs of daily activities.
  • May make minor adjustments on service equipment.
  • May perform general carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing and mechanical work in building maintenance.
  • Performs related duties as required.

  • Perform journey level maintenance work assignments in parks and grounds care and maintenance.
  • Read, understand and apply safety procedures in operating equipment and performing work assignments.
  • Operate equipment used in parks maintenance work.

  • Maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Understand, follow oral and written directions.
Knowledge Of
  • Basic horticulture and care of lawns, shrubs and trees.

  • Uses and application of fertilizers and chemicals required in park maintenance.
  • Principles and practices of parks maintenance.
  • Techniques and procedures of basic carpentry, metal working, masonry, painting, mechanical and electrical work.
  • Use and operation of tools and equipment used in parks maintenance work.
  • Department operations and policies.
  • Applicable sections of codes and laws.
Education and/or Experience

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one year experience as a Maintenance Worker with the City preferred; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
