JOB SUMMARY:

A lifeguard is responsible for the health, safety, and welfare of those using the City’s swimming pools. A lifeguard’s major responsibility is to observe swimmers and enforce regulations in the guarding of life and the prevention of accidents at the City’s swimming pools.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Supervises deck and pool activities
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety for the pool and the area inside the pool closure
  • Instruct individuals and/or groups in proper swimming techniques and water safety
  • Operate and perform basic maintenance to pool filtering system
  • Provide reliable customer service by maintaining the overall commitment to facility programs
  • Participate in concession operation
  • Organize and lead simple water activities at the facility
  • Perform light building and deck maintenance
  • Maintain and submit reports and records as required
  • Attend staff meetings and training sessions as required
QUALIFICATIONS:

ABILITY TO:

KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Practices and techniques to achieve favorable public relations and appearance that projects a positive image
  • First Aid methods and procedures
  • Proper pool supervision techniques, lifesaving procedures and practices, light pool maintenance and pool water chemistry
  • Water Safety instructions
EDUCATION AND/OR

EXPERIENCE:

Must be at least 15 years of age.

One summer of part-time experience as a lifeguard is desirable.

LANGUAGE

SKILLS:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.

MATHEMATICAL

SKILLS:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

REASONING ABILITY:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
  • Work permit if under the age of 18.
  • American Red Cross Title 22 certificate
  • Possession of an American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate, including Standard First Aid and CPR for the Professional
  • WSI certification desirable.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, kneel, stand, stoop, communicate, reach, and manipulate objects. The position requires mobility. Duties require attentiveness to visual and audible cues for recognition and identification of swimmers in distress or in process of unsafe behaviors. The position requires proficient swimming ability and the proper application of rescue and first-aid techniques.

This position requires the ability to properly extract victims from the pool(s) to the deck. Further, this position will require operating equipment such as computer keyboard, cash register, and standard office equipment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions and possible to blood borne pathogens. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud.
