Overview

Certified Surgical Technician - PRN at Blue Cloud Pediatric Surgery Centers.

Summary/Objective

Prepares instruments and supplies to perform procedures according to the surgeon's documented preferred routine. Prepares the operating field for procedures. Performs routine and delegated duties.

Essential Functions

  • Assembles supplies, dental materials, and equipment for scheduled procedures according to surgeon's preference cards and reports to the proper person when supplies are low.
  • Inspects equipment for proper working condition. Notifies DON of equipment failure and arranges for repair.
  • Assists in the preparation of the operating room by ensuring settings on all equipment are set to the surgeon's preferences.
  • Arranges instruments according to routine for the scheduled procedure; confirms that instruments work properly.
  • Maintains availability of instruments and supplies, and dental materials to avoid delays.
  • Reports observed or suspected breaks in sterile technique and responds according to facility policy.
  • Assists in maintaining adequate supplies, and dental materials in the operating room for immediate access during procedures.
  • Directs the circulating nurse to minimize delays when supplies, dental materials, or instruments are needed during a procedure.
  • Assists in cleaning, storing, packaging, and sterilizing instruments according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Assists with storing and stocking supplies, dental materials, and instruments as directed.
  • Maintains and updates instrument cards and surgeons' preference cards.
  • Cleans each item according to manufacturer instructions and lubricates instruments as appropriate.
  • Inspects instruments for damage or defects; sorts and arranges items into correct trays and wrapped items.
  • Labels items according to facility policy and operates prevac and gravity autoclaves, ultrasonic washers, and other equipment for processing instruments.
  • Performs required biological monitoring tests on all sterilizers and Bowie-Dick tests on prevac sterilizers; checks indicators and monitoring strips for proper functioning.
  • Maintains availability of supplies for recording continuity during the sterilization process; notifies OR team and arranges for repair if sterilizer fails.
  • Cleans sterilizers according to facility procedures; responds to patient and surgeon needs in a timely manner.
  • Documents records or forms according to facility policy and communicates patient status to appropriate care staff.
Competency
  • Knowledge of the healthcare field and medical terminology.
  • Grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Exceptional customer service and time management.
  • Experience in ENT and oral surgery.
Supervisory Responsibility

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

Operates in a medical facility with patient care equipment. Hazardous materials are present. Exposure to patients' conditions and potential odors, sights, and contagious diseases is possible.

Physical Demands

Requires high-level visual and auditory acuity; may involve standing for long periods and lifting up to 40-100 lbs as needed. Ability to respond quickly to physician and patient needs.

Travel

No travel is expected for this position.

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma/equivalent or graduate of an approved Surgical Technician program.
  • BLS certification
  • Surgical Technician Certification
Preferred

Education and Experience

Surgical Tech training or facility staff development program for surgical technicians; minimum of one year of surgical technician experience; pediatric or dental surgery experience preferred.
