Metro reporter, Oakland/East Bay

Location:

Remote, in market

Are you an ambitious reporter looking for an opportunity to tell unique stories and hold power to account in two of the nation’s most interesting and consequential cities? The San Francisco Chronicle has an opening for a versatile journalist to cover Oakland, Berkeley and Alameda County, focusing on a variety of subjects including economic development, public safety, housing and homelessness.

The candidate will track Mayor Barbara Lee’s effort to revitalize Oakland after its pandemic struggles, write about tensions in Berkeley — town vs. gown, NIMBY vs. YIMBY —and develop enterprise pieces and profiles that illuminate the East Bay’s most interesting and influential residents.

Reporters at the Chronicle seek to provide must-read, best-in-class coverage through spot news, scoops, enterprise stories and utility-focused pieces that explain and demystify complicated topics. We’re seeking a self-starter who works quickly, has strong writing skills, is comfortable providing and taking feedback, is committed to inclusive journalism, and wants to own the stories that matter most.

What you will do:
  • Report news for  that may also publish in the Chronicle's print editions.
  • Compete to provide readers the timeliest and most authoritative information.
  • Collaborate with other reporters and newsroom teams such as photo, video and data.
What it will take to be successful:
  • At least two years of experience in a newsroom or related work environment.
  • Strong news judgment, creativity, meticulousness and commitment to fairness.
  • An ability to collaborate and work in a fast-changing news environment.
  • An understanding of and curiosity about municipal politics and policy.
  • An ability to develop sources within governments and powerful organizations.
  • Solid writing and storytelling skills.
Requirements:
  • This position is full-time and will include some weekend shifts.
  • The candidate must be based in the Bay Area.

In accordance with applicable law, Hearst is required to include a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role if hired in the state of California. The reasonable estimate, if hired in California is $75,000 - $85,000. Please note this information is specific to those hired in California. If this role is open to candidates outside of California, the salary range would be aligned to that specific location.

A final decision on the successful candidate’s starting salary will be based on a number of permissible, non-discriminatory factors, including but not limited to skills and experience, training, certifications, and education.
