Teacher Consultant, Deaf and Hard of Hearing
Are you passionate about ensuring students are provided with access and services which will increase student academic achievement and functional performance skills, specifically in the low incidence area of deaf and hard of hearing? We are looking for a highly skilled individual with this objective to join our Special Populations, Services for Students with Low Incidence team. You will provide professional development, direct and consultative services, evaluations/assessments, implementation strategies and technology support to Special Education professionals, students, and families in the local school districts of Oakland County.
The goal is that students are provided with access and services which will increase student academic achievement and functional performance skills.
We are seeking a creative, proactive, and collaborative team member with exceptional communication, leadership, and problem‑solving skills to provide specialized, direct instruction and consultative services to students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing birth through 26 years of age. In this role, you will also provide assistance and consultation to local school staff on the resolution of individual student academics;
identification and effective utilization of available instructional materials and equipment; implementation of federal, state, and local initiatives and mandates; and usage of school‑based technology. Your expertise and knowledge of hearing aids, cochlear implants, and Hearing Assistive Technology equipment; general education curriculum and accommodations;
Special Education process and documentation;
American Sign Language and other manual communication modalities; and your ability to provide functional listening skills assessments and professional development, consultation and coaching will be a key in our efforts to increase academic achievement and functional performance skills. You will serve as a resource and liaison to external agencies and professional organizations and will collaborate with Oakland Schools Educational Audiologists, LEA staff, multidisciplinary evaluation teams, and community groups on matters related to deaf and/or hard of hearing as well as specific concerns.
YOU NEED
- Master’s degree in Special Education.
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate with Deaf and Hard of Hearing (SL) endorsement. If an SL endorsement is not currently held, the incumbent would be required to enroll in a program leading up to an SL endorsement within 6 months of employment date and provide documented proof of endorsement when completed.
- 3 or more years of classroom teaching experience, with no less than 2 of them in Special Education. Experience working with students who are deaf and/or hard of hearing is preferred.
- Knowledge and experience working with/recommending hearing aids, cochlear implants, and hearing assistive technology equipment.
- Knowledge and ability to provide Functional Listening Skills assessments.
- Ability to provide professional development, consultation, and coaching.
- Knowledge of Special Education process and documentation and general education curriculum and accommodations.
- Knowledge of American Sign Language and other manual communication modalities.
- Ability to trouble‑shoot and solve complex situations.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
