The College Preparatory School in Oakland, CA, is an independent coeducational secondary school founded in 1960. Chemistry Teacher – 0.75 timeCollege Prep seeks a .75 time Chemistry teacher beginning in August 2026. This teacher would teach 3 sections of approximately 16 students, likely 2 core chemistry courses and an advanced chemistry elective each semester. The science program prioritizes rigor, critical thinking, and hands-on learning. Students are required to take Physics in 9th grade, Chemistry in 10th grade, and Biology in 11th grade.
Nearly all of our students choose to take one or more science electives in 12th grade, including Anatomy and Physiology, Molecular Genetics, Organic Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Astronomy, Marine Biology, and Mechanics, Electricity, and Magnetism.
At College Prep, science teachers share a spacious but cozy office and collaborate with one another. They meet monthly as a department and weekly as teaching teams.
A Qualified Candidate Will- Have a Bachelor s degree in Chemistry or Physics
- Be prepared to teach a course on an advanced topic in Chemistry
- Have a minimum of three years experience teaching Science to students at the secondary or college level
- Have a strong interest in working in a multicultural community
- Be eager to embrace spirited intellectual challenges in a rewarding academic environment
- Have patience, flexibility and a good sense of humor
- Have a clear vision of the purpose and future of secondary level science education
- Have graduate training in Science
- Have experience or interest in teaching an applied science course
Candidates should be eager to spend additional time getting to know and help students outside of the classroom. College Prep teachers also take a share of other departmental, committee, and general school responsibilities, mostly during the 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. school day. Faculty at College Prep are compensated according to a step scale based on years of experience that ranges from $74,000 for teachers with no prior relevant experience to $148,500 for teachers with 44 years of prior experience.
