DEFINITION

Performs a variety of professional structural engineering duties in the preparation of structural engineering plans, specifications, cost estimates, and reports for the District's facilities, including but not limited to passenger stations, office and shop buildings, subway and aerial structures, and other system structures. Ensures work quality and adherence to specifications and performs related duties as assigned.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS

This is the full journey level class within the Structural Engineer series. Employees at this level receive only occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of operating procedures and policies of the work unit. This class is distinguished from the Senior Structural Engineer by its scope of responsibilities and expertise.

Pay Rate

Non-Rep Pay Band 6

REPORTS TO

Principal Structural Engineer or designee.

CURRENT ASSIGNMENT

Office of Infrastructure and Delivery (OID) is recruiting one (1) Engineer to the Structural Engineering team. Incumbents will work on a variety of ongoing projects, including planning, design, procurement, and engineering support during construction, operations, and maintenance of assets. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Prepare design calculations, drawings, technical specifications, and other documents under minor supervision of senior staff.
  • Review design and construction plans, calculations, technical specifications, shop drawings, and related documents for structural integrity and code compliance.
  • Perform site visits to document field conditions, develop detailed drawings or sketches, and prepare structural assessment reports of existing structures.
  • Collaborate with construction teams to support submittals and RFI review, and coordinate with Engineer of Record for design approval, revisions, and changes.
  • Assist and coordinate with Maintenance personnel for structures repair, upgrades, and asset management.
  • Document structural review activities in reports, memoranda, Bluebeam Studio sessions, and comment lists.
  • Establish effective relationships with project team members, contractors, and customers to facilitate understanding and collaboration.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary partnerships to improve design quality and coordination.
  • Demonstrate skills beyond minimum qualifications, including diverse design experience, knowledge of California building codes and standards, proficiency with design software (ETABS, RAM, SAP
    2000, SAFE, AutoCAD, Revit, Navisworks), problem-solving, communication, teamwork, and experience with seismic design and analysis.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform professional structural engineering design functions for the development and maintenance of various structures.
  • Prepare structural engineering plans, specifications, equipment specifications, sketches, and supporting data.
  • Develop preliminary design, cost estimates, and project criteria.
  • Assist in schedule planning and evaluate proposed changes.
  • Prepare reports, correspondence, as-built drawings, and related documentation.
  • Provide support to other divisions and outside agencies.
  • Review construction progress and perform field testing as assigned.
  • Utilize engineering computer programs and applications including CADD.
  • Participate in professional meetings and stay updated on current practices and innovations in structural engineering.
  • EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university.

    Two (2) years of verifiable structural engineering experience.

    LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE

    Registration as a professional engineer in California.

    OTHER REQUIREMENTS

    Must be able to conduct field inspections and testing, possess a valid California driver’s license, and have a satisfactory driving record.

    SUBSTITUTION

    Additional professional experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis. A college degree is preferred.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Environmental Conditions: Office environment, exposure to computer screens, field environment, construction sites, noise, dust, grease, fumes, gases, heat, cold, and inclement weather.

    Physical Conditions: Ability to walk, stand, or sit for prolonged periods.
