Medix is looking for a full‑time Principal Engineer for one of our healthcare clients in Oakland, CA.
The Lead Infrastructure Engineer is a pivotal senior leadership role within the Technology department, reporting to the VP of Information Systems and Cloud Services. This position combines high‑level strategic planning, architectural leadership, and hands‑on engineering execution. The Lead Engineer is responsible for directing the infrastructure team’s efforts, managing key outsourcing partners, and defining the long‑term strategic roadmap for Medix's entire IT infrastructure.
This role ensures the continuous delivery of a resilient, highly scalable, and secure technology environment aligned with mission‑critical business objectives.
The ideal candidate must be an experienced Principal or Architect‑level professional with deep technical expertise across all infrastructure domains. This role requires strong project governance skills, decisive leadership, and the ability to translate strategic vision into functional technology solutions.
Responsibilities- Collaborate with the VP of IS and Cloud Services to architect, define, and execute the enterprise‑wide IT infrastructure strategy and future technology roadmap.
- Drive key design choices and make critical decisions for infrastructure overhauls (e.g., migrating core systems and telephony).
- Provide technical and collaborative mentorship, fostering a high‑performance culture of innovation and continuous improvement within the infrastructure team.
- Manage strategic third‑party vendors and outsourcing partners, ensuring service delivery and performance meet organizational requirements and strategic objectives.
- Oversee the design, deployment, and ongoing operation of the organization’s foundational IT infrastructure (servers, network architecture, storage, and cloud environments).
- Serve as a technical expert, engaging in hands‑on engineering work to optimize, deploy, and manage critical systems.
- Function as the final authority and senior escalation point for the most complex technical and security challenges, driving rapid and comprehensive resolution.
- Proactively monitor system performance, leading optimization initiatives to enhance efficiency, maximize scalability, and ensure high reliability.
- Implement and enforce rigorous security protocols across all infrastructure layers, maintaining a strong overall security posture.
- Ensure strict adherence to organizational policies and relevant regulatory mandates.
- Oversee comprehensive disaster recovery and business continuity planning, testing, and execution.
- Support the ongoing enhancement of security controls within the Information Security Program.
- Lead the response to high‑priority security and operational incidents, coordinating cross‑functional teams to minimize impact.
- Bachelor of Science in a Computing Discipline, or an Associate’s Degree coupled with equivalent substantial professional experience.
- 10+ years of progressive experience in IT infrastructure engineering and leadership roles (Principal/Architect level preferred).
- ITIL certification (v3 or v4) is required.
- Extensive experience with Microsoft Azure services.
- Expert‑level knowledge of networking fundamentals and cloud‑managed devices (e.g., Cisco Meraki, Fortinet).
- Practical implementation of Zero Trust Network Architecture (ZTNA) solutions (e.g., Zscaler ZPA/ZIA).
- Proficiency in leveraging Managed Detection and Response (MDR) tools.
- Strong background in cybersecurity principles (firewalls, IDS/IPS, vulnerability management).
- Mastery of the Microsoft 365 suite (Exchange Online, Teams, SharePoint).
- Expertise in Identity Management, including Microsoft Entra (Azure AD) and on‑premises Active Directory.
- Experience with Microsoft security and privacy tools (Defender suite, Intune, Purview).
- Proficiency in End‑user device management (e.g., Microsoft Intune, Autopilot).
- Expertise in enterprise virtualization platforms (Hyper‑V, VMware).
- Proven ability to lead technical teams, manage complex projects, and collaborate effectively across teams.
- Outstanding communication and interpersonal skills, capable of engaging technical staff and non‑technical executives.
- Exceptional critical‑thinking and problem‑solving skills, with proven ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
