The Black Organizing Project (BOP) is a Black member‑led community organization working for racial, social, and economic justice through grassroots organizing and community‑building in Oakland, California and across the Bay Area. In addition to caring for our community, BOP has adopted a more sustainable philosophy for our staff. BOP takes pride in caring for its staff by providing competitive salaries, 4‑day work weeks, three paid company‑wide seasonal rest periods each year, as well as other perks that promote a healthy work‑life balance.

While BOP currently observes a hybrid work model, we require all program staff to live within a one‑hour driving distance from Oakland, CA.

Organizational Culture

BOP is building toward a free and just world for Black people. About Our Ideal Candidate

Our ideal candidate is a natural leader and team player who is passionate about BOP’s mission and has a deep understanding of grassroots community organizing. They are proactive and organized, which makes it easy for them to attend to a range of administrative details that keep our fundraising work well‑functioning and manageable. Our ideal candidate is an accomplished event planner, who excels at coordinating a team with a diverse skill set to lead and carry out a range of events for donors and foundation representatives.

They have significant experience with fundraising cycles as they relate to private foundation grants and individual donor cultivation, and are enthusiastic about growing their expertise in these areas. Our ideal Development Coordinator candidate has exceptional communications skills, is a strong writer, and is eager to learn and grow their understanding about BOP’s work.

Position Description and Functions

The Development Coordinator position reports to the Development Director.

Individual giving
  • Leads all stages of fundraising event coordination: BOP community events, donor socials, online crowd sourcing campaigns, etc.
  • Tracks and updates transactions and donations made across a number of fundraising platforms and our donor database.
  • Ensures all donors receive timely and appropriate acknowledgments as well as updates about BOP work.
  • Manages our grant processing and filing: ensures timely signatures, schedules narrative and financial report preparation, monitors deadlines, and coordinates with our finance team.
  • Supports grant proposal writing and submission, including coordinating with relevant staff to gather information and complete drafts ahead of deadlines.
  • Supports foundation research, monitors potential matches on grant database, updates notes on funders, prepares funder briefs for BOP staff.
  • Helps to plan, facilitate, and follow up from funder briefings.
  • Attends foundation events on behalf of BOP when appropriate.
Professional and Leadership Development
  • Coordinates BOP’s member Fundraising Committee: convenes members, supports agenda development and project planning, as well as organizes skill shares and political education about fundraising.
