The position of a Police Officer at Oakland University offers competitive wages and benefits, which include the following:
- Candidates for a Police Officer position may receive credit for previous sworn full‑time road patrol experience:
- Less than 4 years of experience equates to Step I compensation
- 4–6 years of experience equates to Step II compensation
- 7 or more years of experience equates to Step III compensation
- Step I: $65,998.40
- Step II: $70,720.00
- Step III: $78,332.80
- For new employees hired after October 1, 2022, the University will contribute 11% of each participating employee’s base salary on a monthly basis. Employees may enroll within sixty (60) days of completing one (1) year of service. Participation cannot be retroactive.
- Police Officers receive free tuition and dependents or spouses are 50% off.
- Free Recreation and Athletic Center Membership.
- External load‑bearing ballistic vests.
- Facial hair permitted.
- Paid Holidays (11).
- Vacation Leave (accrual of 4.62 hours per pay period).
- Sick pay (accrual of 4.00 hours per pay period).
- 48 hours of Personal Time.
- Overtime opportunities available.
- 12‑hour shifts.
- All uniforms, equipment and dry cleaning provided at no expense to the employee.

Work ScheduleThis is a full‑time position. Ability to work varied shifts, weekends and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications- Associate’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
- Must possess a valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass a background check, psychological testing and drug screening.
- Demonstrated strong oral and written communication skills, including keyboarding skills.
- Physical fitness and the ability to perform duties and responsibilities of the position.
- Ability to work and exercise good judgment in stressful situations.
- Ability to work independently.
- Ability to work varied shifts, weekends and holidays.
Current MCOLES Certification or certifiable pending Academy Graduation is preferred.
All QualificationsUnless otherwise required by an applicable collective bargaining agreement, all minimum, additional and desired qualifications are preferred, but qualifications, degrees, and/or experience deemed comparable and/or equivalent by Oakland University may be considered.
