The IRC in Northern California was established in 1975 in response to the needs of the growing refugee population. Over the past 40 years the IRC has resettled nearly 60,000 clients in Northern California. Today, the IRC in Oakland is one of four offices in Northern California providing a range of services including but not limited to economic empowerment (employment and training, small business support, financial coaching), immigration legal services, youth programming, preventive counseling, health promotion, psychosocial wellness,and case management for victims of trafficking.
Collectively, these programs promote and support new the healthy integration of our newest community members into their new communities in the Bay Area.
Job Overview The H&W Caseworker will work under IRC Oakland’s newly launched Bright Futures project, which will provide psychosocial support to school-aged youth and young adults in Contra Costa County.
The H&W Caseworker will coordinate services to ensure school-aged youth and their families are provided with school assistance, resources, and integration that will lead towards school success. This role will also be responsible for the implementation of psycho-social programing intended to support school-aged youth and young adults’ social adjustment needs and community integration, including the facilitation of workshops, support groups and community events.
This position aims to take a holistic approach to supporting refugee and immigrant families and young adults through offering psychosocial workshops and support groups, school case management to navigate educational accommodations and collaboration with school counselors, attain mental health services outside of school, and light resource navigation for parents and guardians to ensure their children have the resources to succeed. The H&W Caseworker will also provide outreach and engagement, education, mental health screening, and referral services.
Major Responsibilities:
• Work with school-aged youth and their families to identify needs, create service plans, and ensure progress through following and maintaining individualized service plans
• Provide services to attain school accommodation and programs, conduct mental health screenings, provide culturally and linguistically appropriate mental health and/or other referrals, collaboration with parents, teachers and school counselors
• Provide resource navigation including community resources, assistance navigating school appointments, and external referrals to public benefits and community partners
• Create, plan, and implement creative workshop curriculums related to mental and emotional wellbeing, stress management, community support and academic success for youth and young adults
• Create, plan and implement young adult art-based events geared towards art-based therapy, psychosocial support, and community connection
• Conduct outreach to existing refugee, immigrant and asylee communities to encourage and increase participation in programming
