The Software Engineer – Microservices is a hybrid role combining hands-on microservices development and AI engineering, with shared ownership of build, deployment, production operations, and security remediation.

The ideal candidate is a highly adaptable engineer who thrives in a fast-paced, production-critical environment and has demonstrated measurable productivity gains by leveraging AI-assisted development and operations tools (e.g., Git Hub Copilot, Claude, or other enterprise-approved AI tools). The candidate must have hands-on experience with Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, Microservices architecture, SQL, and cloud technologies, along with a strong focus on engineering quality, automation, security, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications2+ years of experience w/Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent technical field

Additional experience may be accepted in lieu of education or degree

Experience developing backend applications using Java, Spring Boot, REST APIs, Microservices architecture, and SQL Experience designing and developing secure application and products

Experience with developing, configuring and deploying applications on Microsoft Azure or any other cloud platform

Ability to identify key issues and details, and present understandable alternatives to both technical and non-technical individuals

Ability to create and maintain technical documentation to support the testing, installation, operations, deployment and maintenance of products

Proven ability to effectively present data to facilitate understanding of findings

Ability to solve complex problems using analytical and creative problem-solving skills for design, development and testing of systems

Strong knowledge of prevailing technology trends, design patterns and ability to apply those as needed

Ability to interpret and analyze technology heatmaps and subsequently develop plans to remediate hardware/software nearing End of Life/End of Support Competent at adhering to organizational processes and procedures including but not limited to Scrum and various design artifacts

Knowledge of Agile development methodologies

Base Pay Information The national base pay range at the end is a good-faith estimate of what Delta Dental may pay for new hires. Actual pay may vary based on Delta Dental’s assessment of the candidate’s knowledge, skills, abilities (KSAs), related experience, education, certifications and ability to meet required minimum job qualifications. Other factors impacting pay include prevailing wages in the work location and internal equity.

Pay Grade 21. $80,500 - $174,300

Responsibilities Performs as a key contributor to an engineering team that builds and supports exceptional products that provide innovative solutions to challenging business use cases, existing system and operational problems

Actively participates in architectural design, system analysis, and programming activities on application software; this may often require independent research and study

Design, develop, test, and maintain secure, scalable, and resilient microservices supporting consumer-facing applications

Write high-quality, production-ready Java code using Spring Boot and RESTful API design principles

Practice Test-Driven Development (TDD) and participate actively in peer code reviews

Leverage AI-assisted development tools and GenAI capabilities throughout the software development lifecycle to accelerate coding, testing, debugging, refactoring, documentation, and modernization
