About Paradromics
Brain-related illness is one of the last great frontiers in medicine, not because the brain is unknowable, but because it has been inaccessible. Paradromics is building a brain-computer interface (BCI) platform that records brain activity at the highest possible resolution: the individual neuron. AI algorithms then decode this massive amount of brain data, enabling the seamless translation of thought into treatments.
Our first clinical application, the Connexus® BCI, will help people who are unable to speak due to progressive neuromuscular disease and neural injuries such as ALS, spinal cord injuries, and stroke to communicate independently through digital devices. However, the capabilities of our BCI platform go far beyond our first application. With the brain in direct communication with digital devices, we can leverage technology to transform how we treat conditions ranging from sensory and motor deficits to untreatable mental illness.
The RoleThe Field Application Engineer serves as Paradromics’s technical lead for bringing scientific innovations and new BCI applications into the field. A core focus of this role is reducing R&D to practice, and ensuring that real-world clinical learnings are documented, clearly communicated, and translated into system, process, and risk-management improvements. Reporting to the Principal Applied Scientist, this field-based role acts as a critical bridge between the field and engineering teams.
The position requires significant travel to clinical sites and the ability to operate independently in high-stakes, participant-facing environments.
- Science / engineering feedback loop
- Facilitate the initiation of new studies and new applications into the field, planning and executing the needed neural data collection and BCI sessions
- Compile and summarize clinical observations, system limitations, and session data analyses for presentation to cross‑functional “session triage” teams, contributing new data analyses as needed, to enable iterative system improvements
- Document "edge cases" in neural decoding or hardware performance to harden the system against real‑world variability, translating usability challenges into action items for the Science & Engineering teams
- Technical execution & optimization
- Assist with Connexus hardware and software setup, updates, and testing both locally and in the field
- Act as the frontline diagnostic expert: triage, upscale, and resolve technical issues, including software bugs, hardware failures, and signal artifacts (noise/impedance issues) in the field
- Scaling & operational excellence
- Contribute to the streamlining and automation of session setup, data collection, data analysis, and session triage processes
- Develop SOPs, field guides, training decks, and onboarding materials for technical and clinical staff, and for participants and caregivers
- Collaborate cross‑functionally with Clinical Affairs, Electrical Engineering, and Quality teams to evolve R&D tools into a reliable, medical‑grade BCI platform
- Master’s or Doctorate in biomedical engineering, electrical engineering, neuroscience, computer science, computer engineering, or a related technical field (or equivalent hands‑on experience in neurotechnology)
- Hands‑on experience conducting data collection with biosignal recording systems, ideally neural signals with human participants
- Comfort with R&D hardware/software and experience contributing to iterative system improvements
- Proficiency in Python for time series data analysis (ideally, experience analyzing multi‑channel neural signals from BCIs or EEG/ECoG/MEA systems, and experience with basic ML)
- Clear communication across disciplines;…
