Job Description & How to Apply Below

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Firmware Engineer based in Canada.

This is a high-impact, hands‑on firmware leadership role focused on connected IoT devices deployed at significant scale.
You’ll help shape hardware choices, bring up new platforms, and build the low‑level software that powers real‑world products.
The role spans embedded firmware, hardware integration, connectivity, power management, security, and device lifecycle management.
You’ll work closely with electrical, product, cloud, mobile, and quality engineering teams from prototype through production.
As a Staff‑level engineer, you’ll influence architecture and technical direction while raising engineering standards across the team.
Your work will directly support safer, more efficient, and more sustainable physical operations around the world.
This is a fully remote opportunity for candidates residing in Canada, with substantial autonomy and opportunities for technical growth.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead firmware development for resource‑constrained, connected devices, taking ownership from hardware selection and prototyping through production deployment and long‑term field support.
  • Partner with electrical engineers to evaluate SoCs, memory, sensors, and other hardware components, validate design decisions, and bring new boards and platforms to life.
  • Develop and maintain low‑level firmware including peripheral drivers, bootloaders, device management, firmware updates, power management, and connectivity layers.
  • Bring up new hardware by configuring I/O and validating interfaces such as SPI, I2C, UART, BLE, CAN, and ADC while diagnosing issues across hardware and software boundaries.
  • Design power‑efficient architectures and protocols for battery‑powered devices, optimizing power consumption and maximizing device lifetime.
  • Build reliable systems for collecting, structuring, and transmitting sensor data so that information can be processed efficiently across large device fleets.
  • Collaborate with product, cloud, mobile, and quality engineering teams to ensure firmware‑generated data and functionality translate into reliable customer experiences.
  • Lead technical initiatives from concept and design through implementation, testing, launch, measurement, and production ownership.
  • Establish engineering best practices through architecture reviews, design documentation, code reviews, post‑mortems, and technical mentorship.
  • Drive consensus across teams and influence technical direction while balancing system‑level performance, reliability, maintainability, and customer impact.
  • Use automation, testing, and AI‑assisted development tools thoughtfully to accelerate delivery while maintaining a high standard of software quality.
Requirements
  • 8+ years of professional experience developing firmware for resource‑constrained embedded systems and products deployed to real customers.
  • Strong proficiency in C, including the ability to reason about compiler behavior, memory, linker maps, stack traces, and low‑level system failures.
  • Significant experience with bare‑metal and RTOS development
, such as Zephyr, FreeRTOS, or equivalent, including scheduling, memory management, synchronization, and timing decisions.
  • Proven experience bringing up new hardware platforms and debugging first‑power‑on issues in close collaboration with electrical engineering teams.
  • Strong understanding of low‑level interfaces and protocols including SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, and ADC
    .
  • Practical hardware‑debugging experience using tools such as oscilloscopes, network analyzers, and RF spectrum analyzers.
  • Demonstrated Staff‑level technical scope, with experience leading initiatives across hardware, firmware, cloud, and quality disciplines from concept through production.
  • Strong systems thinking and cross‑layer judgment, with the ability to understand how low‑level engineering decisions affect end‑user experiences.
  • Excellent technical communication skills, including the ability to produce actionable design documents, code reviews, technical proposals, and post‑mortems.
  • Ability to move quickly in a high‑growth environment…
