Responsible for the operation of the Police Department radio, answering all incoming telephone calls, operating and controlling panels, and other related equipment to dispatch officers and run various checks. Also required to greet visitors, type, file, and operate the City phone system as needed. Must be constantly aware of the whereabouts and activities of each officer. The dispatcher acts as the link between the public and police officers and may be the only source for officers to call for assistance in perilous situations, ensuring their safety and that of the public.

Duties and Responsibilities

- Answer all incoming police telephone calls (emergency and non-emergency); determine priority and dispatch units.*
- Operate the police base radio and control panels. Dispatch officers to complaints, accidents, calls for service, alarms, etc.*
- Provide initial contact with the public, answer routine questions, or refer inquiries to appropriate personnel.*
- Operate the UTS 20 Terminal (LEADS) to check warrants, registrations, stolen vehicles, missing persons, etc. Use LEADS to assist other departments.*
- Validate all entries in LEADS, including data on missing persons, wanted persons, stolen guns, and vehicles. Regular validation is crucial for safety.*
- Monitor alarms and radios of Oberlin College and Oberlin City utilities. Notify relevant departments or dispatch officers during emergencies.*
- Perform typing of reports, day sheets, complaint records, arrest cards, and court documents.*
- Act as Deputy Clerk for the Oberlin Municipal Court, handling waivers, bonds, court forms, and funds.*
- Maintain and update filing systems and business cards.
- Keep daily records of radio transmissions, complaints, and reports, updating logs per shift.*
- Secure and retain master keys at the Police Department.
- Maintain records of items turned in to the department.*
- Act as jailer when prisoners are held, including frisking and ensuring security.*
- Operate electronic security equipment within the jail and monitor cells.*
- Take criminal complaints and reports from citizens when officers are unavailable.*
- Schedule and dispatch workers, work crews, and service vehicles via radio or phone.*
- Arrange repairs to restore services and schedules.
- Relay work orders and messages to field personnel using radios or phones.
- Consult with customers and supervisors to address service or equipment issues.
- Prepare daily work schedules and run sheets.
- Manage work orders and oversee communications within assigned areas.*
- Monitor personnel and equipment locations to coordinate services.*
- Advise personnel on traffic issues, hazards, and conditions.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, typing at 40 WPM, good grammar and writing skills, and a pleasant demeanor. Ability to work under stress, prioritize calls, and understand criminal and civil law is essential. Must pass hearing, background, psychological, polygraph, drug, and alcohol tests, and have a telephone lingness to work any shift is required.
Knowledge of clerical procedures, security policies, and effective communication skills are necessary for success in this role.
