Job Summary

The Equipment Technician II position is a full time (1.0 FTE), 12-month continuing, OCOPE position working 37.5 hours per week, reporting to the Lead Network Engineer. Oberlin College is a highly selective liberal arts college of 2800 students and operates a powerful best-of-breed network in order to support education and research on campus.

Responsibilities

The incumbent will have general responsibility for supporting our campus network infrastructure, with focus on iOT devices such as Telephony and Security Camera Systems. Duties include ensuring the stability, functionality, and security of these systems across the organization. The technician will also serve as secondary support for the broader Network Infrastructure, working closely with the Lead Network Engineer.

Essential Job Functions
  • Manage and maintain network connectivity and functionality for campus Internet of Things (IoT) devices such as Telephone, Security Cameras and Environmental monitoring devices.
  • Ensure proper documentation of IoT network configurations, devices, and systems.
  • Provide secondary support for general network infrastructure tasks as assigned.
  • Maintain and support MS Teams, VoIP systems, and related telephony hardware/software.
  • Troubleshoot call quality issues and connectivity problems.
  • Manage user extensions, voicemail configurations, and call routing changes.
  • Provide end-user support for telephony device setup, provisioning, and training as needed.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of phone system architecture and user configuration.
  • Maintain and support IP-based security camera systems and NVRs.
  • Ensure proper recording, storage, and access to surveillance footage.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot camera connectivity, video quality, and recording failures.
  • Assist with installation, repositioning, or replacement of camera units as needed.
  • Monitor and troubleshoot network aspects of environmental monitoring IoT devices to ensure operational reliability.
  • Maintain and manage an accurate inventory of network equipment and related hardware.
Marginal Job Functions

Network Infrastructure Assistance

  • Assist the Lead Network Engineer with monitoring, configuring, and maintaining LAN/WAN infrastructure.
  • Support the implementation of network upgrades, including switches, routers, and firewalls.
  • Help perform network diagnostics and troubleshooting.
  • Participate in scheduled maintenance, testing, and documentation tasks.
Required Qualifications
  • Diploma from technical school in a related field, or an Associate’s degree in IT, Telecommunications, or a related field (Bachelor’s preferred).
  • 2 years of experience supporting telephony and/or security camera systems.
  • Basic knowledge of network fundamentals (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs).
  • Experience with VoIP systems (e.g., Cisco, Avaya, Mitel) and IP-based surveillance systems.
  • Familiarity with structured cabling and physical device installation.
  • Experience and proficiency in Microsoft Suites.

  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective communicator with both technical and non-technical staff.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation.

Compensation

The Pay Group 7 OCOPE union position is to be filled at an hourly rate of $29.45 or at the appropriate transfer rate, and includes a generous benefits package.
