The Facilities Operations Department of Oberlin College invites applications for the position of Maintenance Technician. This is a full-time, 12 month, 40 hours per week, Tues through Saturday, 4 pm to 12:30 am, Service employee position reporting to the Facilities Operations Project Director.
Responsibilities
The incumbent will perform the full range of Maintenance Technician duties and support at all College locations. A list of typical duties for this positions includes, but is not limited to, the following:
Essential Job Functions
* Effectively respond to and handle various emergencies as appropriate and when necessary, refer situations to a manager. Receive directives and dispatch from the Office of Safety and Security as well as Facilities Operations.
* Conduct preventive maintenance (PM) services as directed by the Supervisor.
* Perform/assist with tasks related to roofing (roof drain cleaning, gutter cleaning, etc.).
* Carry out and/or help with basic electrical work when appropriate, such as, but not limited to: replacing switches, outlets, ballasts and batteries, resetting clocks, re-lamping in and outside lighting, and making minor repairs to custodial equipment.
* Make and/or help with minor plumbing repairs such as, but not limited to, maintaining and fixing faucets, flushing valves and water heaters.
* Operate drain cleaning equipment.
* Execute and aid with fundamental/basic tasks for the HVAC Department, such as, but not limited to: changing or repairing radiator steam traps, adjusting and/or changing belts on air handlers, replacing sump pumps and changing filters.
* Respond to heating and cooling issues (making minor adjustments).
* Perform and/or assist with basic painting and window repairs (e.g., glazing and replacing glass).
* Perform/assist with campus snow removal and salting needs on campus.
* Complete minor vehicle maintenance on Oberlin College vehicles such as, but not limited to: jumping batteries, replacing windshield wipers/blades, and airing tires.
* Read and record equipment and meter information (e.g., water, gas, steam and electric meter indicators).
* Carry a radio for communication at all times to provide coverage for immediate issues that may arise on campus as well as for normal communications of work related duties.
* Complete and turn in work orders as noted in the work order procedure.
* Follow all college polices, local ordinances, OSHA and other applicable state and local safety policies and standards.
* Provide minor service as needed to ready athletic fields.
* Provide reports to appropriate area managers concerning corrective actions that are needed or performed.
* Maintain computer-based preventive maintenance records where applicable.
Marginal Job Functions
* Operate/assist with pool cleaning equipment and pool chemical systems as requested.
* Assist in the training and development of additional Maintenance Technicians.
* Report needs for repairs as well as evidence of fire, illegal entry, and vandalism/damage and other concerns
* Help maintain cleanliness and organization of college work areas, storage/supply rooms, and vehicles used for transport of Facilities Operations equipment and supplies.
* Maintain all college vehicles and equipment that are assigned to your responsibility in a clean and neat manner.
* Safeguard all college property which is under your responsibility.
* Operate all college property in a safe manner.
* Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
* Must be a high school graduate or possess GED, with ability to pass basic applied mathematical and skills questions during or following interview.
* Applicants must demonstrate the following:
Mechanical aptitude and competence; ability to read and comprehend technical directives; effective verbal and written communications; ability to learn and willing to work well with all segments of a diverse campus community on a continually changing basis, as well as work as part of a team or responsibly on his/her own with little or no supervision. Incumbent must be willing to participate in training classes and seminars to improve job skills.
* Must be physically/mentally capable to: safely lift and move up to 50-pound objects, work in confined spaces, in and under pool water, on extension ladders, scaffolds and high-lifts at heights up to 60 feet; perform a variety of manual labor; and work in adverse weather conditions. Candidate must have basic familiarity with the usage of computers, computer software, and internet browsing ability.
* Candidates must possess a valid Ohio driver's license and be able to meet the College's insurability standards.
* Must work and communicate in a cooperative and professional manner in a diverse campus environment with ethnic and cultural diversity.
