Position: Sewer Collection Operator/Operator "B"

The Sewer Collection Operator is responsible for the operation, maintenance and repair of the sanitary and storm sewer systems, lift stations and related infrastructure. Operates and maintains associated tools and equipment.

The Sewer Collection Operator “B” is an entry level/trainee position and the employee is not expected to perform all duties at the time of employment.

The Sewer Collection Operator shall work with some independence and be committed to the mission, vision and values of the City and demonstrate ethical conduct, community stewardship, individual initiative and responsive service. The Sewer Collection Operator shall demonstrate effective performance through clear, concise communication; teamwork; proper utilization of resources; personal accountability; and responsibility.

Primary

Job Duties
  • All duties of a Service Maintenance Worker position.
  • Operates hand tools, light and heavy equipment including backhoes, excavators, sewer vacuum and jet trucks, street sweeper, dump trucks, etc.
  • Operates pipeline inspection camera equipment.
  • Cleans, inspects, tests, maintain and repair sewer lift pumping stations and all related equipment.
  • Cleans, inspects, maintains and repairs sewer mains, lateral connections, manholes, catch basins and related equipment.
  • Inspects construction of new sewer mains, laterals, manholes, catch basins, etc.
  • Performs concrete and masonry work.
  • Develops and maintains records.
  • Performs utility locates.
  • Responds to emergency situations as required.
  • Responds to, assesses, advises and communicates with the public to remedy problems and complaints with the public.
  • Complies with all safety procedures, work rules, and regulations and directives established to prevent injury and or to reduce hazards to themselves, fellow employees, municipal property, and the public.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent. Must be able to perform heavy manual labor. Must have the ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Must be able to work safely and responsibly with little supervision. Must be able to function effectively with co‑workers as a team. Must have a telephone where one can be reached for call‑outs and emergencies. The position requires a valid state of Ohio driver’s license.

The employee is required to obtain the OEPA Class 1 Wastewater Collection Operator’s license within 2 years of the date of hire.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR COLLECTION OPERATOR
  • OEPA Class I Wastewater Collection Operator’s license
  • Ohio Class B Commercial Driver's License including air brakes, with a tanker endorsement

Salary Range: $23.30-$29.12/Hour D.O.Q.

ADDITIONAL QUALIFICATIONS FOR COLLECTION OPERATOR B
  • OEPA Class I Wastewater Collection Operator’s license within 2 years of the date of hire
  • Valid Ohio Class B Commercial Driver's License including air brakes, with a tanker endorsement within 3 months of date of hire.

Salary Range: $20.27-$25.34/Hour D.O.Q.

  • Knowledge of basic safety principles and practices.
  • Knowledge of sanitary sewer collection operations.
  • Knowledge of storm sewer collection operations.
  • Ability to use machinery properly and maintain the equipment in best working order.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with supervisor, co‑workers, employees, City officials and the public.
  • The ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented, with the ability to verbally communicate information and ideas.
  • Basic reading, writing and math skills.
  • Ability to investigate, analyze and effectively resolve problems and conflicts.
  • Ability to multi‑task and perform with evolving priorities.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive issues with discretion and sound judgment.
