The role of the Registered Nurse is to work as a member of the corrections health care team by demonstrating knowledge for assisting in the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation. Under the supervision of the DON, the nurse directs and guides patient teaching and activities that are appropriate to his/her education and competencies.

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Ability to use the nursing process, as evidenced by physical and psychosocial observation skills.
  • Communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Problem-solving and clinical judgment.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality.
  • Spanish fluency is desirable but not essential.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance.

Education:

Graduation from an accredited RN program.

License:
Current Florida RN license.

Confidentiality: Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of HIPAA patient privacy rights. Maintains confidentiality of all medical, financial, and sensitive materials and information in printed, electronic, or verbal form. Accesses only the minimum necessary patient information for job responsibilities.

Work Environment: The nurse works in a climate-controlled indoor medical environment, primarily in a correctional facility, with exposure to potential hazards including blood borne pathogens. Must adhere to all security rules and regulations.

Essential Functions

  • Maintain professionalism when communicating with inmates.
  • Respond quickly to emergency situations.
  • Follow infection control guidelines to minimize infection risk.
  • Perform assessments and healthcare services including blood draws, IV therapy, and wound management.
  • Perform tests and procedures as ordered, such as EKGs and lab tests.
  • Conduct sick calls and maintain clinical competency.
  • Assist in physical, psychological, and social patient assessments under supervision.
  • Implement treatment plans, administer medications, and document encounters accurately.
  • Respond to emergencies and participate in drills.
  • Maintain supplies and inventory.
  • Recognize and report patient changes.
  • Participate as part of the healthcare team with effective communication.

Physical Requirements

  • Continuous use of vision, olfactory, auditory, and tactile senses.
  • Active work requiring standing, walking, bending, and lifting over 25 pounds.
