The Town of Ocean City, MD is hiring for a Vehicle and Equipment Mechanic/Firefighter I or II. Salary range is as follows:

Vehicle and Equipment Mechanic/Firefighter I

$52,998 - $67,579 Annually

Vehicle and Equipment Mechanic/Firefighter II

$55,640 - $71,219 Annually

SUMMARY Vehicle and Equipment Mechanic/Firefighter I

Performs mechanical work on highly specialized fire, rescue, and marine apparatus and vehicles with little supervision; does related work as required. Responds to emergency incidents as a Firefighter and fire apparatus driver/operator.

Vehicle and Equipment Mechanic/Firefighter II

Performs highly complex automotive repair work and associated equipment mechanical work on highly specialized fire, rescue, and marine apparatus and vehicles with little supervision; does related work as required. This is a skilled mechanic’s position requiring general and specialized certifications for associated emergency equipment. Responds to emergency incidents as a Firefighter and fire apparatus driver/operator.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Vehicle and Equipment Mechanic/Fire I
  • Performs routine inspections, preventative maintenance, diagnoses and analyzes problems, and repairs departmental fire, rescue, marine apparatus and related fire department equipment.
  • Using specialized diagnostic equipment, traces out and repairs onboard vehicle systems and life‑safety systems, including electrical/electronic, carburetor/fuel injection, hydraulic/pneumatic heat and air conditioning, emergency lights/sirens & related systems, onboard pneumatic/hydraulic systems.
  • Repairs and maintains critical, no‑fail equipment in peak mechanical operation to ensure safety while responding to, and operating at, emergencies.
  • Disassembles, installs, cleans, repairs, replaces parts, rebuilds, reassembles and tests various apparatus and equipment components as required by Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Ensures fire apparatus and emergency vehicles comply with NFPA, DOT and manufacturer requirements.
  • Coordinates, oversees, verifies and documents 3rd‑party fire pump flow testing, ground ladder testing, and aerial truck ladder testing and certification in accordance with NFPA requirements. Completes yearly DOT inspections of fire apparatus fleet.
  • Performs fleet maintenance tasks, including motor tune‑ups/repair, brake inspection and adjustment, replaces parts or entire electrical systems, replaces bulbs and fuses, and maintains accurate service records and inspection logs for fire department fleet.
  • Maintains portable pumps, small gasoline engines, emergency generators; installs various types of sensitive electronic equipment in apparatus and equipment.
  • Field Work:
    Must be capable of performing emergency maintenance in poor weather/temperature environments, including on emergency scenes and along roadside, when necessary.
  • On‑Call:
    Available to report to work after hours, nights, weekends, holidays and during special events for emergencies in order to return damaged, critical apparatus or equipment to service.
  • May serve on Department’s Apparatus Specifications Workgroup and provides guidance and information related to the replacement of capital and small vehicle fleet. May attend associated pre‑bid, apparatus building, and final inspections meetings (on‑site and at manufacturer’s facility) to ensure purchased apparatus meets contract specification requirements.
  • Orders and maintains parts inventory.
  • Assists Command Staff with budget preparation.
  • Ability and licensure (Driver’s License and MFSPQB) to operate heavy equipment including fire apparatus.
  • Thorough knowledge of the Marine Fleet, operations of a Fire Boat, and the ability to perform routine maintenance and coordinate repair of marine fleet motors and equipment.
  • Other duties may be assigned, consistent with job requirements of the position.
