Job Summary
The University of Southern Mississippi’s Department of Coastal Sciences invites applications for Teaching Assistant positions to aid instructors in teaching field‑intensive marine science courses at the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory (GCRL) in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Programs will be offered during summer intersessions, the first and second summer terms of the Gulf Coast Research Laboratory’s Summer Field Program. Class meetings occur weekdays throughout the term, with flexibility for weather‑related field activities.
Possible overnight travel and transition to virtual platforms may be required.
- Gather and prepare necessary supplies and lab equipment for lab and field activities, ensuring equipment is returned in usable condition.
- Coordinate field experiences, including arranging field lunches, vehicle and vessel usage, and community resource provisioning.
- Enforce laboratory safety rules and ensure student compliance.
- Assist with administering tests, quizzes, grading, and delivering course content across lecture, laboratory, discussion, and online formats.
- Maintain communication with Summer Field Program staff and adhere to USM policies and procedures.
- Perform other related duties as required.
- B.S. in Biology, Zoology, Coastal Science, or a related scientific field. Exceptionally qualified undergraduate students with relevant TA experience may be considered.
- Thorough knowledge of the course(s) the applicant wishes to teach, including relevant field work or research experience.
- Commitment to upholding the mission and values of USM, the College of Arts & Sciences, and the School of Ocean Science and Engineering.
- Ability to assist with conducting field courses in various Northern Gulf of Mexico habitats.
- Willingness and ability to drive a 15‑passenger van for class field trips.
- Clear criminal background and ability to pass a background check.
Prior teaching assistant experience in undergraduate and/or graduate programs.
Experience Using Canvas, Blackboard, or Other Online Learning PlatformsPrevious experience with Canvas, Blackboard, or comparable online learning systems is preferred.
