Position Overview
The primary function of the Surgical Technologist is as a “scrub technologist” in the surgical suite and other clinical areas. The surgical technologist, under the guidance of the physician and registered nurse, is responsible for implementation of AST Standards which provide for safe and effective techniques and processes for quality patient care. The surgical technologist must possess strong interpersonal skills and a surgical conscience.
The Surgical Technologist helps in the preparation of the room before surgery. He/She is responsible for all items required for their surgical table, including all required instrumentation and sutures.

Education
High school graduate or equivalent required. Graduate of an accredited Surgical Technologist program required.
License
N/A
Certification
Current Surgical Technologist Certification preferred.
Must complete BCLS certification by the end of position orientation. Must maintain current BCLS certification.
Experience
Prior experience as a Surgical Technologist preferred.
Reports To
OR Lead Coordinator and Patient Care Manager.
Supervises
None.
Physical Demands
Work involves using many physical motions in performing daily work activities. Work is moderately active: involves standing with frequent requirements to move about the office, move about the facility, and to travel to another facility within the SRHS service area. Work involves exerting a negligible amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Employee is responsible for safely moving, lifting and handling all supplies, equipment and patients, with assistance. Safe lifting practice is expected in all areas of job performance and employees are responsible to request help whenever needed, regardless of the weight, using available assistance, i.e., lifting devices or additional staff.
Work is subject to exposure of body fluids, sputum and tissues, which may carry the hazard of infectious disease. Work involves using repetitive motions: substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and or fingers while operating standard office equipment such as computer keyboard.
Work involves being able to perceive the nature of sound at normal speaking levels with or without correction; the ability to make fine discriminations in sound. Work requires close visual and acuity and the ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus, i.e. shift gaze from viewing a computer monitor to forms/printed material that are closer to compare data at close vision.
Must be able to be active for extended periods of time without experiencing undue fatigue. Must be able to work schedules assigned with the understanding that changes may be instituted according to the needs of the hospital for off days, shifts or weekends.
