Reading Associate (Part‑time) Instructor Pool 2022 - 2023

Mira Costa College:
The college is accepting applications to build a pool of instructors for possible future part‑time assignments at all locations. The department chairperson or designee will review applications as vacancies become available.

Assignments may include days, evenings, or weekends. Instructors may be assigned to any campus or authorized facility.

Applications are valid through June 30, 2023, at which time they will expire. A new posting for this pool will be posted on July 1, 2023.

Vaccination:
Mira Costa College requires that all employees be fully vaccinated against COVID‑19. Unvaccinated employees must submit proof of vaccination or request and receive approval for exemption before their start date.

Compensation is based on education. To view the current Associate (part‑time) Faculty Salary Schedule, please select “Salary Schedules” to the left on the navigation bar. Employees must arrange for direct deposit via electronic fund transfer.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in education with a specialization in reading or teaching reading.
  • Or bachelor’s degree in any academic discipline AND 12 semester units of course work in teaching reading AND master’s degree in English, literature, linguistics, applied linguistics, composition, comparative literature, TESL, or psychology.
  • Or a valid appropriate California Community College Credential in the discipline area.
  • Or the equivalent.
  • Have sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Desirable Qualifications
  • Basic function:
    Under direction, plan, organize and teach assigned courses, provide feedback, evaluate student performance, and perform related duties.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Plan, organize and develop instructional materials, teach courses using sound pedagogical methods, modify methods to meet diverse student needs, participate in development and assessment of student learning outcomes, use instructional technologies, participate in review and selection of textbooks.
  • Provide prompt feedback on student assignments; evaluate performance; assign grades; maintain records; submit grades by deadlines.
  • Be available to students by telephone, email, LMS or personal conference; meet scheduled office hours; maintain flexible schedule; refer students to resources.
  • Maintain accurate and complete course records; record attendance using management software; submit attendance and other records by required deadlines.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Contribute to collegial environment and collaborate on policies, curricula changes; demonstrate willingness to substitute when required.
  • Play an active role in campus life; attend faculty and staff meetings; participate in activities contributing to educational goals; serve on committees or task forces.
  • Meet professional responsibilities in accordance with contractual obligations.
Other Duties
  • Stay current in academic discipline, maintain licensure/certification/continuing education.
  • May make arrangements for and lead field trips and other events associated with course of study.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge
  • Theory, principles, techniques applicable to assigned disciplines at advanced level.
  • Teaching and instructional techniques appropriate for diverse student populations.
  • Trends in educational technologies.
  • State education code, Title 5 and other laws related to curriculum requirements.
  • Instructional and tutorial techniques for a diverse range of students.
  • District organization, operations, policies and resources.
  • Safety policies and safe work practices.
Ability
  • Clearly convey subject matter to diverse students.
  • Employ instructional technologies to maximize learning.
  • Encourage development of critical thinking, problem solving, communication skills.
